On Tuesday, JackRabbit Slim’s Live Music Pub, 209 S. Main St., hosted a rehearsal open to the public, and on Wednesday a songwriter’s jam musician networking session.

This evening at 7 p.m. as part of the Thursday solo performers series, local favorite Danny Franklin will play.

At 7 p.m. on  Friday is the Artist Showcase (open mic) hosted by Mo Brines and capping off the week at 8 p.m. Saturday, full band night features the group Ultralush.

Bluegrass & Blue Jeans Benefit for Sole Hope

MT ULLA — The Bluegrass & Blue Jeans Benefit for Sole Hope willl be held on Sunday, March 8 beginning at 6 p.m. at Back Creek Presbyterian Church. An evening of bluegrass music performed by the Back Creek Bluegrass Boys, plus a hot dog supper will support the Salisbury-based Sole Hope charity. Monetary donations are welcome, as well as old blue jeans which will be used to create shoes for children and adults in Uganda, Africa.

Luck O’ the Irish First Friday Downtown

Spoon carving class returns

GOLD HILL — Steve Martin has been carving spoons for more than 20 years. He specializes in the use of traditional hand tools and traditional techniques, emphasizing safety and environmental awareness, and use of green wood. This is the third year Steve has been teaching spoon carving at River Pines in Gold Hill. No student under 18 will be allowed without prior approval. Special exhibit to open at Aquarium

CONCORD —  “Claws,” a brand-new special exhibit at Sea Life Charlotte-Concord Aquarium, is now open to the public.

Recognized as having the largest leg span of any crustacean, the highlight of the new exhibit is the Japanese spider crab, a crab that can grow up to 14 feet wide or the size of a small car. These unique creatures can inhabit depths of up to 2,000 feet and are typically found crawling along the seabed of the Pacific Ocean near Japan. Another unique creature, the brightly colored peacock mantis shrimp can punch its prey with speed 50 times faster than the blink of a human eye, allowing it to break though the shells of clams and mollusks. Speaking of eyes, these crustaceans have the most complex eyes in the animal kingdom.

150th anniversary of Battle of Bentonville

FOUR OAKS — Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site at 5466 Harper House Road, will be the site on Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22, of North Carolina’s largest Civil War reenactment, held on parts of original battlefield.

Saturday’s battle, “The Fight for Morris Farm,” will take place at 3 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to be at the battle location by 2 p.m., as sections for ground seating, chairs and standing room only will fill up fast. Note: battles will not begin until those seated on the ground are in place.

Sunday’s Battle, “Last Grand Charge of the Army of Tennessee and Morgan’s Stand,” will begin at 1:30 p.m.. Visitors are encouraged to be at the battle location by noon.

Avett Brothers at MerleFest 2015

WILKESBORO — MerleFest 2015 is slated forApril 23-26 and will be headlined by the Avett Brothers, Jim Avett and the Earls of Leicester, Robert Earl Keen, Lee Ann Womack and festival circuit favorites Trampled By Turtles.

The four-day event, an annual homecoming of musicians and music fans, will once again take place on the campus of WilkesCommunity College in Wilkesboro. ‘Art About Women’ show judged by Salisbury’s Don Moore 

HICKORY — Thursday, March 12 is the opening reception for the Spring exhibition “Art About Women,” honoring women and illustrating women’s issues. The work in the show was judged by Salisbury’s Don Moore, long-time coordinator of the art program at Mitchell College in Statesville.
