The 12th-ranked Catawba baseball team rides a 12-game SAC winning streak into this weekend’s home series with Wingate.

Catawba (28-6) holds a two- game lead over Tusculum in the standings with nine games remaining.

Catawba holds a 69-59 edge in  128 previous meetings with Wingate. The Indians are 8-2 against the Bulldogs the last two years.

The Indians are averaging nearly 10 runs a game,  and eight of the nine regulars are hitting over .300.

Will Albertson leads the attack, batting an even .500. Albertson has hit 16 home runs and driven in 60. The Catawba season records are 24 homers (David Trexler and Jerry Sands) and 85 RBIs (Sands).

Freshman first baseman Chance Bowden (Salisbury) enters the  Wingate series with a 17-game hitting streak.

Veteran center fielder Blake Houston (South Rowan) is batting .407 and leads the nation in walks. He’s scored 51 runs.

Shaefer Shepard and Craig Brooks anchor the weekend pitching staff with  7-1 records.

The teams  open the series on Friday at 6 p.m. The three-game set concludes with a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.

Wingate leads the SAC with 56 home runs.

Thomas Spitz is the top offensive player for Wingate. He is hitting .352  with team highs in home runs (11) and RBIs (46).

College baseball

Noah Holmes (East Rowan) and Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had two hits each in Appalachian State’s 12-10 win against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday.

Women’s lacrosse

Catawba lost 21-15 to Pfeiffer on Thursday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.

The Falcons improved to 8-4, while the Indians dropped to 7-6.

Chalene Morrison led Pfeiffer with six goals.

Megan Shortt  notched four goals and had two helpers for Catawba.

Prep golf

East Rowan shot 308 in the qualifying round of the Palmetto Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and was fourth out of 40 teams.

The Mustangs will now play 36 holes in the Championship Flight.

Nick Lyerly shot 1-over 73 and  tied for third. Logan Shuping shot 74 and tied for sixth. Other scores were Ben Rollins (80), Bryson Sprinkle (81) and Jacob Durham (85).

• Davie tied for 14th in the qualifying round. Chris Carr and Coby Carter shot 77s for the War Eagles.

Prep baseball

First-round action continues in the F&M Bank Classic Friday in Kannapolis. Carson plays Robinson at 1:30 p.m. A.L. Brown plays Salisbury at 4 p.m. Pisgah plays Northwest Cabarrus at 6:30 p.m.

Prep track

A.L. Brown’s teams won   a home track meet with Concord, Mooresville and  Piedmont.

Winning for the A.L. Brown girls were Camria Sturgis in the 100 (12.40 seconds) and 200 (26.24); Jela Lewter in the 800 (2:39) and discus (85 feet, 1 inch); Savannah Jordan in the 100 hurdles (16.90); Lauren Trull in the 300 hurdles (51.20); Emani Hough in the high jump (4-10), and Aitana Grant in the long jump (15-2) and triple jump (33-3 1/2).

A.L. Brown won the 4×100 relay.

• Winning for A.L. Brown’s boys were Brandon Hernandez in the 1600 (4:43) and 3200 (10:49); Logan Miller in the 110 hurdles (15.80); Herman Freeman in the 300 hurdles (43.30); Fred Baldwin in the high jump (6-0); Brandon Dry in the long jump (19-1), and Alex Fuller (124-6) in the discus.

The Wonders won the 4×800 relay.

Local golf

In the eGolf Gateway Tour’s St. James Plantation, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 71-74 — 145 and is tied for 20th after two rounds.

•  Trinity Oaks will host its 9th annual Golf Tournament on Friday, May 15, at The Crescent.  The tournament is a fundraiser, with proceeds going to adding outdoor amenities on the Trinity Oaks campus.

The entry free is $75, and the tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Golfers may enter as individuals, or groups of four may enter as teams.

There will be a Hole-in-One contest to win a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and prizes for closest to the pin and longest drive. A light lunch will be provided. Dinner will follow the tournament with music and an awards ceremony.

The Livingstone  women’s softball team (9-9, 3-5 CIAA)  will host Winston-Salem State on  Friday at the Jaycee-Optimist Sports Complex.

The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.

So. Rowan sign-ups 

Southern Rowan American Legion Baseball is holding signups for Junior and Senior legion teams on April 19 at Gary’s BBQ in China Grove.

Junior Legion sign-ups will start at 2 p.m. followed by Senior sign-ups at 4 p.m.

All players must bring a certified copy of their birth certificate along with a parent to sign medical and Form 2’s.

A notary will be on hand to notarize paperwork.
