KANNAPOLIS — Carson took advantage of miscues by A.L. Brown starting pitcher Clayton Gilmore and the defense behind him for three runs in the top of the first inning Monday at A.L. Brown’s Veterans Stadium. The Cougars defeated the Wonders, 15-2, to take seventh place in the F&M Bank High School Baseball Classic.

The Cougars, ahead 5-2 after four innings, sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the fifth. Brycen Holshouser had a two-RBI double, and Tanner Christy smacked an RBI-double as the Cougars scored five runs.

Carson (7-6) got another two-RBI double in the top of the sixth inning from Holshouser en route to another five runs.

Holshouser had three doubles and batted in a game-high four runs. Heath Mitchem had a pair of doubles to go with his three RBIs.

Carson pitcher Kris Peacock tossed four innings to get the victory. He gave up two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and no walks.

Gilmore was saddled with the loss after pitching 3-2/3 innings. He surrendered five runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Wildcats capture 5th over Pigsah

KANNAPOLIS — Lake Norman’s Josh Ladowski blasted a leadoff triple in the top of the first inning Monday against Canton Pisgah, and the tone was set. The Wildcats used their bats effectively against the Bears to pick up an 11-2 victory and capture fifth place in the annual F&M Bank High School Baseball Classic.

Ladowski was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of triples, a pair of runs and an RBI. After his leadoff triple, he scored the game’s first run on a passed ball. He got his second triple in the top of the second inning, and a throwing error on the play allowed him to score for a 3-1 lead.

The five-run third inning for the Wildcats got started with a leadoff solo home run by Nick Pasco. Chase McGlamery, however, provided the big hit with a bases-loaded triple that pushed the Wildcats’ lead to six runs.

Ladowski’s RBI single to right field scored McGlamery, and the Wildcats were ahead, 8-1.

There was a frightening moment in the bottom of the sixth inning. Lake Norman relief pitcher Ryan James took a comeback shot to the forehead off the bat of Thomas Tatham. The ball hit James, and he went straight to the ground. After a few minutes, he walked off under his own power. He was fine after the game.
