Catawba’s Jerrin Morrison was named to the Freshman All-America team by the Division II Bulletin.

Morrison was the only player from the Southeast Region named  to the squad and is one of 11 nationally.

Morrison scored more than 20 points six times and averaged 15.5 points and 5.1 rebounds.He had 33 blocks and 38 steals.

LC basketball

Livingstone had three players named to the BOXTOROW HBCU D-II All-America team.

Hakeem Jackson was a first-team pick. Eric Dubose and Eric Mayo were second-team picks.

College baseball

Catawba is at home Tuesday at Newman Park against Barton and also will be home Wednesday against UNC Pembroke.

Both games start at 6 p.m.

Will Albertson enters this week with astronomical numbers — a .500 batting average, 19 homers and 67 RBIs in 37 games.

He’s the D-II leader in RBIs.

He’s only tied for second in batting average as Spring Hill’s Taylor Eads is batting .570 for the season.

Catawba pitcher Craig Brooks is leading D-II  —by a lot — with 108 strikeouts.

  

Prep baseball

The all-tournament team in the F&M Bank Classic was named by the  Intimidators staff.

Two players from each team were named: Salisbury’s Ryan Jones and Riley Myers; South Rowan’s Dillon Norton and Peyton Penninger; Carson’s Heath Mitchem and Ryan Bearden; Robinson’s Michael Young and Nick Weston; Lake Norman’s Riley Zayicek and Austin George; Northwest Cabarrus’ Tim Furr and Alex Rodriguez; A.L. Brown’s Damon Johnson and Tyler Hendley, and Pisgah’s Trevor Johnson and Thomas Tatham.

• West Rowan lost 3-2 to Weddington on Monday in a non-conference game.

Bryan Ketchie pitched a complete game for the Falcons (8-5) and struck out three.

Lee Poteat drove in a run, but the Falcons were held to two hits.

• Action resumes Tuesday in conference races.

In the CCC, North Rowan plays at Salisbury at 7 p.m.

In the SPC, South Rowan is at Northwest Cabarrus; Carson is at Central Cabarrus; East Rowan is at Cox Mill, and Concord is at Hickory Ridge.

Prep tennis

Salisbury’s boys won 9-0 against North Rowan on Monday.

The Hornets are 8-0.

Salisbury plays North Rowan against Wednesday at Salisbury.

Prep softball

West Rowan pounded 13 hits and outscored Mount Pleasant 12-8 in non-conference  softball on Monday.

Taylor Martin had two hits and scored four runs for the Falcons.

Parker Greene went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs. Hunter Gibbons and Marissa Yow had two hits  and two RBIs each.

Gibbons had the 100th hit of her career.

Savannah Cline had a triple.

Peyton Greene was the winning pitcher and struck out eight.

Kat Craver hit a homer for the Tigers.

The Falcons led 8-1 after four innings and held on.

Prep golf

In SPC golf at The Club at Irish Creek on Monday,  East Rowan won with a 146 total.

Medalist Nick Lyerly shot 33. Logan Shuping shot 34, Bryson Sprinkle shot 39, and Jacob Durham shot 40.

South Rowan placed second at 148.

Davis Richards shot 34 to lead the Raiders. Other scorers were Dalton Little (37), Landon Johnson (38) and Andrew Hubbard (39).

West Rowan shot 169 for fifth place. Scorers were Denny Triche (39), Cameron Hassard (41), Coyte Kyles (43) and Cody Stewart (46).

Carson shot 178 for seventh.

Scorers were Bobby Bauer (42), Tristen McDaniel (44), Logan Overcash (45), Josh Coker (47) and Joseph Mitchem (47).

Led by Brody Davis’ 37, Hickory Ridge shot 161 for third.

Led by Walker Cress’ 36 and Stephen Carroll’s 37, Concord shot 161 for fourth.

Drew Stephens shot 38 for Cox Mill.

Prep soccer

South Rowan won 7-0 against North Rowan in a non-conference matchup on Monday.

Mary Jester had a hat trick for the Raiders. Leslie Franks scored two goals. Karigan Ford and Brittany Sprinkles scored one goal each.

Local golf

Mary Snider of Lexington made a hole-in-one at McCanless on Monday.

Snider made her ace from 98 yards  with a  4-Hybrid on the No. 12 hole.

It was her second career ace and first since 1986.

  Witnessing the shot was Roy Snider, her husband.

•  Sixty-two GARS members played a Captain’s Choice event at Corbin Hills.

The first-place team at minus-12 was Winsten Mahaffeu. Clive Mahaffey, Bob Clark and Ross Howard.

Three teams tied for second place at minus-10.

Closest to the pin on the No. 2 hole was Ross Howard. The longest putt on No. 9 was made by Donnie Burris.

Whit Merrifield (Davie, South Carolina) was one of the last players sent down by the Kansas City Royals.

He’ll start this season the same place he finished the last one, with the Triple A Omaha Storm Chasers.

Merrifield was the Royals’ Minor League  Hitter of the Year last season.
