Area Sports Briefs: Catawba baseball splits; Carson tops Hornets

Catawba’s baseball team split a SAC doubleheader against Mars Hill in Asheville on Saturday.
The Indians lost 6-4 in the opener when Mars Hill rallied for three runs in the eighth. The Indians romped 10-1 in the nightcap.
Will Albertson and Blake Houston had three hits apiece in the opener.
Craig Brooks pitched well in the first game, striking out 12 in seven innings but didn’t get a decision.
In the second game, T.J. Wharton mashed two homers and drove in five to back the seven-Ks pitching of Shaefer Shepard.
Luke Setzer drove in two for the Indians (32-9, 20-5).
The teams will finish the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. A Catawba win would mean the Indians’ eighth SAC title in 12 years.
• Noah Holmes (East Rowan) had three hits and Brian Bauk (Salisbury) had two RBIs as Appalachian State won 6-5 against South Alabama on Saturday.
College softball
Catawba was swept at home by Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, losing 4-1 and 1-0.
Catawba (21-15, 10-8 SAC) had only three hits in the opener. Gina Gerone drove in the Indians’ run.Carley Tysinger was in the circle and fanned nine.
Natalie Naturile and Emily Huneycutt had two hits for Catawba in the second game. Tysinger (17-9) struck out eight but took her second loss of the day.
• Elon’s Chelsea White (East Rowan) earned her fourth save in Saturday’s 7-4 win against Towson.
College lacrosse
Seeds for the SAC women’s lacrosse tournament were announced Saturday.
Six teams make the tournament.
Fourth-seeded Catawba will host No. 5 seed Wingate on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a first-round matchup.
Catawba lost 18-4 at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
• Catawba’s men (5-8, 2-6) didn’t qualify for the SAC tournament, but they upset Lenoir-Rhyne 17-15 on Saturday in Hickory.
Conner Kennedy scored six goals.
Prep baseball
Carson beat Salisbury 6-1 in non-conference baseball on Saturday in China Grove. The Cougars (10-6) won their third in a row. Salisbury (9-6) suffered its third straight setback.
Salisbury led 1-0 early, but Carson batted around in the third, produced seven hits and scored six runs.
Ben Shoaf’s double started the big inning. Michael Morrison, Heath Mitchem, Owen White, Matt Saul and Ryan Bearden had singles, and Grayson Whicker capped the inning with a double.
Kris Peacock started and pitched three innings for the Couars. Caleb Hall (1-1) pitched four innings, struck out three and allowed three hits.
Zack Bates (0-1) took the loss.
• The Greater Cabarrus Stallions defeated Albemarle 16-3. Hunter Shepherd had three hits and four RBIs. Tyler Hartsell had two hits and three RBIs. Caleb Threadgill, Dalton Lankford and Isaiah Boger had two hits each. Travis Cone had a two-run triple. McConner Wallace was the winner for the Stallions (15-4).
Prep track
East Rowan pole vaulter Marshall Shank cleared 15 feet for second place in the Taco Bell Invitational in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday. Carson’s Zachary Marchinko was third in the 3200 in a PB 9:22.
• In boys track at East Rowan on Friday, the Mustangs won with 139.75 points. Next were West Rowan (88.5), Hickory Ridge (86.25), Cox Mill (44.75) and Central Cabarrus (10.75).
East Rowan’s Conor Honeycutt won the 1600 (4:56) and 800 (2:03). Other winners for East Rowan were Max Wall in the triple jump (42 feet, 11 1/2 inches), Shank in the pole vault (14 feet), Devaniel Dale in the 400 (52.7 seconds) and Josh Little in the 100 (11.2).
East Rowan won the 4×100. West Rowan winners were Kevin Gaillard in the 300 hurdles (42.1), Jaylon Sanders in the 200 (22.2), Juwan Houston in the 110 hurdles (15.4) and Jordan Bostian in the 3200 (10:39). West Rowan was strong in the relays, taking the 4×400 and 4×800.
• In the girls meet, Hickory Ridge won with 106 points. Next were East Rowan (90), West Rowan (88), Cox Mill (56) and Central Cabarrus (31).
West Rowan won the 4×100. Brieanna Owens won the 800 (2:37), while Shikkera McNeely won the shot put (31-5 1/2), and Khaila Hall won the triple jump (37-6).
East Rowan winners were Jocelyn Lowe in the discus (89-0) and Brittany Small in the high jump(5-0).
• In a meet at West Rowan, A.L. Brown’s boys won with 103.5 points. Next were West Rowan (92), Carson (67), Hickory Ridge (57) and Northwest Cabarrus (51.5). A.L. Brown won the 4×100 and 4×400.
A.L. Brown’s Kellen Corson won the 1600 (4:45) and the 800 (2:03). Other winners for the Wonders were Alex Fuller in the discus (130-3) and Brylan Weaks in the 100 (10.8).
West Rowan winners were Galliard in the triple jump (41-8 1/2) and 300 hurdles (40.6), Houston in the 110 hurdles (15.0), Sanders in the 200 (22.5), and Joel Thomas-Morales in the long jump (20-7).
Carson winners were Garrett Ingold in the 3200 (10:12) and Tyler Mason in the shot (46-11). Carson won the 4×800.
• In the girls meet at West Rowan, Northwest Cabarrus won with 96.5 points. Next were A.L. Brown (94.5), Hickory Ridge (93), Carson (43) and West Rowan (36).
A.L. Brown winners were Camria Sturgis in the 100 (12.4) and 200 (26.6), Aitana Grant in the triple jump (33-2 1/2) and Jaiya Lewter in the 400 (1:03.07).
The Wonders won the 4×200.
West winners were McNeely in the shot (32-2) and Owens in the 800 (2:28). Carson’s Chloe Kirkpatrick won the pole vault (10-0).
Intimidators lose
The Kannapolis Intimidators lost 6-3 at Lakewood on Saturday at FirstEnergy Park. Lakewood overcame a 3-0 deficit with Herlis Rodriguez’s 3-run homer.
Mason Robbins and Zach Fish homered for the Intimidators (1-2).
Hurricanes fall
RALEIGH — The Detroit Red Wings gave Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk the night off.
They didn’t need their stars — not with Petr Mrazek stopping every shot he faced. Mrazek made 35 saves in his third shutout of the season, leading Detroit to a 2-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday.
