15th Granite Quarry Colored/Ashford School reunion

GRANITE QUARRY — The 15th Granite Quarry Colored/Shuford School reunion was observed over Easter weekend, beginning Friday night with a Keep it Casual Social at the Geneva I. Oglesby Center. About 65 former students and family members attended. The evening began with former students introducing themselves, followed by dinner, games and music.

On Saturday morning an Alumni & Friends breakfast was held at the Center, followed by a business meeting and a memorial service. Clarence J. Shuford Jr. was the guest speaker for the service. Students that passed away since the last school reunion were honored, including Virginia O. Clarke Shuford, wife of a former principal, school history committee member and reunion committee member.

The highlight of the reunion was the Pink & Gray banquet on Saturday evening, which began with a welcome reception to get acquainted with special guests and honorees. It featured Andre Springs, athletic director and golf coach for Livingstone College and pro golfer. This year’s honorees and recipients of the Trailblazer awards were kids of Shuford School and title-winning 1969 football team members, who were among the first black players at East Rowan. Returning to present the second Trailblazer Awards was Calvin Stawder, who integrated East Rowan  High School and the Rowan School System, and himself the recipient of the inaugural award.

In addition, 17 former students and graduates of the Granite Quarry Colored/Shuford School were honored as senior honor society inductees. The school began by serving elementary through high school. Several students recognized are graduates of the high school and included were students from the first graduating class and two school centenarians.

Inductees attending the reunion were: James Allison and Mavis Moss of Salisbury; E. Rudolph Oglesby, DDS, of Kernersville; and Spurgeon Oglesby of Suitland, Md. Other inductees recognized were Adam Clodfelter, Ruth H. Corpening, Ollie Wrice, Lorraine Strawder, the Rev. H. B. Waiters; and Sydney B. Harris of Rowan County. Out of town students were Lois S. Keith and Ralph Morgan of Pennsylvania; Rachel Thomas, Virgin Islands; and Willie Mae Workman of Maryland.

Recognized as school centenarians were Edna Allison Price of Rowan County, 100 years old; and Willie Mae Randle Workman of Maryland, 100 years old.

The Granite Quarry Colored/Shuford Memorial School inductees are former students 85 years and older. Each student was presented with a certificate and a gift during the Pink & Gray banquet on Saturday evening.

 

Shady Grove holds senior Senior Prom

Shady Grove Baptist Church, 600 S. Long Street, East Spencer, NC. Rev. Timothy Bridges Sr. Pastor. The John G. Gaston Scholarship Fund is hosting a Senior Prom, April 25, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm at the Guiding Light Convention Center located at 360 Boundary Street, East Spencer, NC.

The participants are Senior members of the church age 60 and older. They will perform quotes from the poet Maya Angelo collection, including ‘Phenomenal Woman”. They will be escorted by a male family member.

The participants are; Alene Arnold, Escorted by her Son-in-law Pastor Edell Bellmay Sr. of South Carolina. Mae Bell Allen, Pastor Bridges mother-in-law representing the Bridges family.. Annie Caldwell, Pastor Bridges aunt will be escorted by her husband James Caldwell, Elfrances Ellis, escorted by Carl Bank, Ernestine Fortune escort by Eddie Byers, Alberta Glymph, escorted by Shawn Glymph, Naomi Jones, escorted by Glenn Ambers, Helen Houston, escorted by Antonio Houston, Ervenia Stockton escorted by Kahlil Stockton,Dolores Shannon, escorted by husband, Sandra Smith, escorted by John Krider Jr.,Essie Ruffin, escorted by A Deacon.

You will be entertained by, “By a Show of Talents” a Black Tie event. If you do not have your invitation, a donation of 25.00 will be accepted at the door. The Scholarship Fund thank you for your support.

 

2015 Jabberwock 

The Salisbury Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Delta Fort2tude Foundation, Inc. will hold their annual scholarship fundraiser event on Saturday, April 25th, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, at 6pm.

“My Future Is So Bright, I Have To Wear Shades” is the 2015 Jabberwock theme. There are ten participants ranging from ages four to ten who have been preparing for this event since January. During their preparation, the participants participated in workshops such as Self-Esteem, When I Grow Up, Etiquette, Respect/Attitude and My Vision.

Please join us for an evening of talent, through song, dance, and musical instruments.

The participants will conclude the program by dancing to the traditional minute.
