The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged a pair with possession of pyschedelic mushrooms following a routine traffic stop Friday shortly after midnight.

The driver, Katelyn Michelle Marks, 19, of the 12400 block of Old Beatty Ford Road, Rockwell, and the passenger Brandon Tyler Cochrane, 22, of 265 Dew Lane, Gold Hill, were charged with possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver a schedule I controlled substance and possession of a schedule I controlled substance. Additionally, Marks was charged with maintaining a vehicle to keep/sell controlled substances and Cochrane was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

A deputy stopped a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier for an equipment infraction. The vehicle was initially observed on U.S. 52 and was stopped on Cherry Street, near the Rockwell Police Department.

During the course of the stop, Marks provided the deputy with consent to search the car. Deputies found a  black box in the back seat that had a lock on it. Deputies asked the two for the key to the box and Cochrane provided it. Deputies opened the box and discovered a plastic bag containing 20 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, a Schedule I controlled substance, and a gun. Other evidence found during the traffic stop showed that the two were en route to distribute the mushrooms.

Cochrane and Marks were each issed $5,000 secured bonds. Cochrane remains in the Rowan County jail and Marks has since been released.
