Local music school presents Spring recital

On Sunday, May 24 several students of Marc Hoffman at the Salisbury School of Music performed a recital at the school in the Meroney Theatre in downtown Salisbury. Participating students included vocalists Hannah-Claire Fuller, Georgia Reichard, Daniel Thrailkill, Zoe Watson, Makayla Upright, Matthew Jones, William Jones and Gavin McDaniel. Pianists participating were Michael Fullerand Brooklyn Buck. Also performing were guitarists/vocalists Daniel Thraikill and Gavin McDaniel. For more information call 704-633-8188 or visit www.salisburyschoolofmusic.com

 

Recognition for Legacy members

At the May 16 chapter meeting, eight mother-daughter Legacy Members were recognized. Legacy is defined as the daughter, granddaughter, adopted daughter, stepdaughter or legal ward of an active or deceased member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Delta Xi Omega chapter Legacy Members include Carolyn P. Holt/Regina P. Jumah; Drucie Moss/Jasmine M. Thomas; Margaret Rush/Melissa R. Lane; Lovetta Ealy Moore/Sh’Myra L. and L. Sh’Rae Moore; Lillian L. Morgan/Stephanie Morgan; the late Viola H. Dixon/Tanya Dixon-Neely and Tonette Dixon Mack and Marva G. McCain/Andrea M. Noble.

The recognition was a part of Sisterly Relations activities implemented by the international corporate office and Sororiy international president Dorothy Wilson Buchannan. Shelia Brown-Miller, a member of the Sisterly Relations committee, made the presentation. Marsha Pruitt is chairperson of the committee and Lillian L. Morgan is chapter president.

During the same meeting Mrs. Morgan and Sakia Sellers, member of the fundraising committee, unveiled the chapter’s first ever chapter T-shirt, whcih contains an original design as well as the chapter name.

 

Salisbury Rowan Church Women United May Friendship Celebration

May Friendship Day is an annual celebration intended to bring racially, culturally and theologically diverse women together to celebrate our Christian unity. This celebration has been designated as a time to recognize outstanding young women from the various member churches for their valuable contributions to their church and community.

176 women and some clergymen attended the luncheon gathering at Christ United Methodist Church at 3401 Mooresville Road on May 1. The women of Trinity Wesleyan partnered with the women of Christ UMC to host the event which was catered by Debbie Suggs. The theme for the celebration was “Journey of the Caregiver.” The chairperson of the celebration was Jean Little of Soldier’s Memorial A.M.E.Zion, who was memorialized during the program due to her unexpected death. It was a poignant moment as Dorothy Gill-Smith of Moore’s Chapel A.M.E.Z. led the gathering in “Sweet, Sweet Spirit.” Doris Brown of Jerusalem Missionary Baptist, CWU president, presided and led the memorial. Sarah Byerly of Christ UMC and Martha Richardson of Trinity Wesleyan welcomed the group. Jean Kennedy of Southern City A.M.E.Z. introduced the theme giving the artists’ interpretation of the theme logo. Tonya Cornelius of Sills Creek A.M.E.Z. presented the purpose of the “Least Coin” offering. Tawanda Mitchell of White Rock A.M.E.Z. offered the prayer of thanksgiving. Sandra Hunt of Third Creek A.M.E.Z. and Jean Lowery of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist read the guiding scriptures. Montrella Davis of Sacred Heart Catholic led the purpose of the CWU offering and Rev. Arthur Heggins of St Luke Baptist blessed the offering. The Outstanding Young Church Women awards were presented by Doris Brown and Dorothy Gill-Smith. The recipients are as follows:

The attendees were generous in the donations brought for the Good Shepherd Clinic. Jean Allen, representative of Good Shepherd was present to receive them and thank the group.

The next celebration of the SRCWU will be the Human Rights Celebration on August 7, 2015 at New Zion Missionary Baptist at 2785 Dunn’s Mountain Road.
