Company celebrates third year in Salisbury

Imperial Brown, a leading manufacturer of custom walk-in coolers and freezers, recently celebrated its third-year anniversary of opening an East Coast manufacturing facility with the acquisition of the W.A. Brown & Son Co. on Long Meadow Drive in Salisbury.

The acquisition led to the merger of the two facilities, Imperial Manufacturing in Portland, Oregon, and WA Brown & Son.

The Salisbury manufacturing facility has experienced a 150 percent increase in volume in the three-year period, according to Justin Sandall, executive vice president, CFO and COO. This was achieved by adding and replacing equipment, reducing the manufacturing footprint and enhancing product flow, he said.

Imperial Brown is currently negotiating a lease extension of the Salisbury facility for another 15-year period, Sandall said.

At an employees’ celebration, Cheng Vang, an eight-year employee, said that the new factory design is clean and organized, saving time. John Costantino, a 15-year employee, said that the company is growing fast with great new equipment and excellent management.

“The merger has given us bicoastal operations, which brings with it many benefits in terms of logistics, redundancy, additional capacity, market reach and economies of scale,” Sandall said. “Those are obvious benefits that any outsider would see. An industry insider would see that we picked up new technology.”

Sandall said that the true catalyst to the company’s growth is the new technology created by combining technologies from both plants into the hybrid walk-in cooler design. “This is something that the industry has never seen before,” Sandall said. Customers no longer deal with limitations of either manufacturing techniques. “After the acquisition, we instantly became able to provide hard-nose panels, soft-nose panels and a full complement of doors, both swing and slide,” Sandall said.
