China Grove High School sixty-fifth class reunion
Master of ceremonies was Jim Menius. Classmates and guests were welcomed by Don Livengood. The invocation was given by Virginia Deal Garver. A memorial service was held for the deceased members by Gaynall Buckwell Bost. Forty of the 64 graduating class are deceased.
Pictures and mementos of classmates were displayed and each classmate was presented with a booklet. The tables were decorated with class colors, green and white. Class mascot Brenda Smith Seamon and her husband, Ronald, were guests. Entertainment was presented by the Free Spirit Gospel group from China Grove.
Classmates and spouses attending were: John and Sallie Atwell, Brady and Betty Beaver Ratchford, Gaynell Buckwell Bost, William Christy and friend Susan Hollett, Faye Yost Carter, Virginia Deal Garver, Peggy Eaton Hooper and son Jerry, Bruce and Mary Eudy, Elaine Howle, Don and Margaret Livengood, Jim Menius, Grace McKnight Reynolds, Billy and Margie Martin, Hubert and Hazel Propst Elliot, Edith Waller Jackson, TC and Mary Wilhelm Plexico.
The class meets on a quarterly basis. The next meeting will be at the China Grove Family House on July 14.
Knocking on the door of ‘A Doll’s House’
This afernoon: an introduction to Ibsen’s timeless play
Enhance your experience of St. Thomas Players’ production of “A Doll’s House” by attending the lecture “Knocking on the Door of A Doll’s House: An Introduction to Ibsen’s Timeless Play” given by Dr. Bethany Sinnott. This educational event will enrich your understanding of the classic play and the controversy it caused with its commentary on marriage and cultural norms in the 19th century.
The lecture is today at 2 p.m. at Center for Faith & the Arts, 207 W. Harrison St. Parking and entrance is behind Haven Lutheran Church.
David Pulliam, the mastermind behind the St. Thomas Players award-winning production of Arcadia, will direct Simon Stephens’ modern translation of this Henrik Ibsen classic. Performances run June 18-20 and 25-28 at Lee Street theatre; tickets can be purchased at http://www.leestreet.org/tickets/

Woofstock is today
Woofstock is a festival of music, dogs, and demonstrations from 1 to 5 p.m. Entry to the festival is free. It will be held at 315 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., near the Civic Center). Pets on the Porch
A photo opportunity for pets is being offered as a fundraiser for the Rowan Museum. On Saturday, June 20, the Museum will host Pets on the Porch, where a professional photographer will be at the site with Museum volunteers. Participants may bring their pets to the front yard of the Museum’s 1815 federal style Utzman-Chambers House at 116 S. Jackson St. from 9 a.m. through 3 p.m.
Participants and pet will receive their digital photos on a thumb drive for $25 a setting; each additional setting is $10. Pets (and owners) can be posed on the steps and porch (with or without furniture). All animals must be on a leash or crated upon arrival. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ups can be taken. Rowan Arts Council finalizes grant cycle
The Rowan Arts Council has finalized the fiscal year 2014-2015 grants cycle. In 2013 the Rowan Arts Council established the Arts & Cultural Development Grant (ACD) with the goal of growing and expanding arts and culture in Rowan County. The ACD grants are designed to support the vision and mission of the Rowan Arts Council by providing direct support to arts and cultural partners. Grassroots Grants, issued by the state of N.C. to designated county partners, provide per capita-based funding for arts programming to ensure opportunities for citizens to experience the arts in their own communities.
Grants were awarded to a diverse range of projects, including: Concert Choir, Lee Street Theatre, Piedmont Players, Inc., Rowan Blues and Jazz Society, Rowan County Parks and Recreation, Salisbury Public Art, Human Relations Council, Chickweed, DSI Buskers Bash, Fulton Heights Neighborhood, Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society, and Salisbury Sculpture Show. Grants awarded by the Rowan Arts Council, including Grass Roots Grants and ACD Grants totaled $42,326.
Alzheimer’s Association offers healthy aging program

The Alzheimer’s’ Support Group in Rowan County meets the fourth Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.
