Area Sports Briefs: Yankees draft Albertson in Round 40

Published 12:37 am Thursday, June 11, 2015

From staff reports
Catawba junior Will Albertson was drafted by the New York Yankees on Wednesday.
The slugging catcher was picked on the 40th round. He was the 1,203rd overall pick.
Albertson was a consensus first team All-American in his first year with Catawba after transferring from Campbell.
He earned National Position Player of the Year honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Daktronics.
Albertson led Division II with a .467 batting average, ranked second with 91 RBIs and was third with 26 homers.
He set school and SAC records for RBIs, home runs and hits (114) in a season.
During one amazing stretch, Albertson went 38-for-48 and was twice national hitter of the week.
The SAC and Southeast Region Player of the Year’s crowning moment came when he hit a walk-off homer in the Southeast Regional.
Albertson joins teammate Craig Brooks as 2015 draft picks. Brooks was taken in the seventh round by the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday.
This marks the third straight year Catawba has had multiple players picked in the draft. Since 1970, Catawba has produced 24 draft picks, including 13 in the past eight years.
As a junior, Albertson has the option to return to Catawba for his senior season, and it’s certainly possible he will choose to do that after listenening to the Yankees’ offer.
On the other hand, he accomplished just about everything a player could do this season in D-II except win the national championship. Tremendous, record-breaking seasons by Albertson and Brooks led Catawba to a national runner-up finish.
Albertson is the third Catawba player to be drafted by the Yankees. Kevin Hemphill was a seventh-rounder in 1978, while Benny Callahan was tabbed in the 31st round in 1980.

Intimidators
KANNAPOLIS — Brett Austin went 4-for-4, but four unearned runs beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-3 on Wednesday.
Kannapolis (28-31) lost to the Greensboro Grasshoppers despite banging out 12 hits. Greensboro scored three runs in the fifth inning on errors, walks, a wild pitch and a hit batsman.
Kannapolis starter Yelmison Peralta (2-5) took the loss. Hoppers reliever Scott Squier (5-3) earned the win.
The Intimidators wrap up the three-game series on Thursday when Luis Martinez (1-6, 7.82) takes the mound for Kannapolis.
