GRANITE QUARRY — The first Grand Ole Granite Quarry Duck Derby will be held in Granite Lake Park from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
The derby featuring the rubber ducks purchased prior to the race will begin at 12:30 p.m. A hefty breeze generated by a Rowan Rescue Squad air boat will propel the ducks to the finish line on the lake.
Many people already have purchased ducks at local businesses, and the Merchants Association also will have a tent set up for those wishing to purchase a duck between 10:30 a.m. and noon.
The first-place duck wins $1,000 for its owner; second-place, $500; and third-place, $250.
Owners do not have to be present to win. Underneath the park gazebo, members of the town’s parks committee will be judging a “Derby hat” competition. Anyone can enter by signing up at the shelter by 11:30 a.m. The hat contest will begin at 11:45 a.m., and the winner will be announced at noon.
Raffle prizes will be drawn throughout the day. The purchase of a duck also makes the owner eligible for the raffle.
