EAST SPENCER — Aldi is hiring 30 to 50 people for a second shift at its distribution center off Old Union Church Road.

Aldi, a German-based supermarket chain, currently employs 140 people at the center and wants to start the second shift in 2016, according to Jutta Mitchell, director of warehousing and logistics at the facility. She said new hires will train on the first shift before starting the second shift.

Mitchell said the distribution center is adding a second shift to support the company’s growth. The jobs are permanent, she said.

Starting pay for the jobs is $17.50 an hour. Jutta said the number of hours employees work depends on the volume of shipments coming and going from the center. Typically, she said, workload ranges from 32 to 38 hours a week.

The center operates seven days a week, and the jobs are described as part time.

RowanWorks, the county’s economic development corporation, is partnering with Aldi to hold a job fair for the new positions on Tuesday at the West End Plaza on Jake Alexander Boulevard in Salisbury. The fair will be held in the morning from 8 to 11 and again in the afternoon from 4 to 6:30.

Sharp Transit, a carrier for Aldi, will also be at the job fair. The company is looking to hire 10 full-time drivers. Applicants must be 23 years old, hold a Commercial Drivers Licence and have two years of driving experience.

People can preregister for the Aldi fair at www.aldijobfair.eventbrite.com . Preregistration is encouraged to ensure an interview with a hiring manager, the company said in a news release.

For the Sharp Transit jobs, people can register at www.sharptransit.eventbrite.com.

“Aldi is a staple in our community and a valued employer,” Robert Van Geons, executive director of RowanWorks, said in the release.

Aldi job candidates must be 18 years of age, hold a high school diploma or GED and be able to lift up to 45 pounds.
