Euart reunion

ROCKWELL — The annual Euart reunion was held on Sunday, June 14, at Rockwell United Methodist Church. The covered dish meal began at 1 p.m. with announcements by vice president Cathy Webb Powell, followed by prayer with the Rev. Warren Miller of Rockwell United Methodist Church. There were 35 family and friends present. Carl Euart was the oldest in attendence and triplets Emily, Jason and Anthony Euart, daughter and sons of Chris and Sarah Euart, were the youngest.

Traveling the farthest distance were Randy and Debbie Lomax of South Carolina.

Married the longest at 65 years were Carl and Zula Euart.

Flowers were presented by family members in memory of those who have passed: Carolyn Euart Morgan, Charles and Sue Webb and Betty and John Truett.

During announcements it was discussed about changing the date/time/place of next year’s reunion. No changes were made at this time. The next reunion will be held on June 12, 2016, at the church unless otherwise notified.

 

Miller reunion

Descendents of Ernest E. and Agatha Eller Miller held their 48th family reunion at Dan Nicholas Park on Saturday, June 20. A covered dish lunch was held for 35 family members and 5 guests. The guest were Crystal Nettles, Carol Nettles and Laura Nettles from Woodleaf, and Emily Cusick and Allison Neely from Duncan, SC.

Also in attendance was one on of the surviving children Zeta Miller Smith from Salisbury, and Ernest E. Miller from Cary was not able to attend this year.

The deceased children are Amy R. Miller, Olivia Miller File, Coy R. Miller, Rena Miller Morris, Edgar A. Miller, Pauline Miller Leazer and James J. Miller.

President of the reunion committee, Don Smith of Huntersville, recognized the following family members with a gift:

Oldest member present – Zeta Miller Smith, 88 years young from Salisbury.

Youngest member present – Joshua Caleb Coley 2 years old from Spartanburg, SC, son of Scott and Sabrina Earnhardt Coley, grandson of Claude and Ann File Earnhardt and great-grandson of Lee and Olivia Miller File.

Traveled farthest – Lisa and Nessa Miller Jones, 360 miles from Virginia.

Family with most members present – Olivia Miller File family with 12 members and three visitors.

New member added to the Miller family since last year’s reunion was:

Cynthia Smith, wife of David Smith of Huntersville, son of Don and Shirley Smith and grandson of Zeta Miller Smith.

Members passed away since the last reunion were Don Leazer on November 25, 2014 and Gary Leazer on May 26, 2015 in Salisbury, sons of the late Hubert and Pauline Leazer; and Jim Prosser on March 24, 2014 in Abu Dhabi, son-in law of the late James J Miller.

Officers elected for the 2016 reunion were:

President – Don Smith, Huntersville;

Vice president David Smith, Huntersville;

Secretary – Zeta Smith, Salisbury;

Treasurer – Pat Floyd, Salisbury.

The 49th reunion will be held on May 21, 2016 at Dan Nicholas Park.

 

Post 107 members attend convention

J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 members Commander O.Mae Carroll, Comrades Abe Daniels, Daniel Haddock, Wayne Hill, Homer Robertson, Keisha Westmoreland, John Pharr, Harold Broadway and SAL member Harold Broadway Jr. attended the 97th Annual American Legion Convention in Raleigh on June 10-13.

Post 107 won three American Legion Convention awards for outstanding and meritorious Service on a post level:

• W.K. Rhodes: Community Service,

• W. Coburn Alexander: Children and Youth and • William T. Joyner:  Rehabilitation.

The Department of North Carolina is comprised of approximately 340 posts throughout the state. Commander Carroll won Legionnaire of the Year in 1992 and Comrade Leazer won in 2004. Comrade Abe Daniels was introduced to the audience as the winner of the 2008 N.C. Dept American Legion Post Adjutant Award. He assisted the Commander in the compilation of the 2015 reports for the aforementioned Post 107 awards.

The commander accepted the three prestigious plaques in memory of Comrade Roy R. Leazer Sr. who passed on February 27. He was the Godfather and Historian who served in all capacities at Post 107.

The N.C.Department American Legion posted a special tribute to his memory and stated that “he served on many committees at the Department level and National level,” accompanied by his picture in the 2015 program booklet.

Comrades Homer Robertson and Keisha Westmoreland were installed as 19th District Commander and Vice District Commander during the convention.

Post members recently had installation of 2015 officers at the Post home at 1433 Old Wilkesboro Road. Installing officer was past post commander Wade Murphy.

2015 officers include: Commander O.Mae Carroll, Adjutant Abe Daniels, Asst. Adjutant Daniel Haddock, Finance Officer Abe Daniels, Asst. Finance Officer  Harold Broadway, Chaplain Leonard Hall, Asst. Chaplain John Knox, Service Officer  Lewis Reid, Historian  Henrietta Whitty, Judge Advocate  Homer Robertson, Sgt.-at-arms  Wayne Hill, Asst. Sgt.-at-arms John Pharr, and three appointed executive members TBA.

On behalf of the post membership, the Commander would like to extend thanks to all 183 post members and the community at large for supporting the 2015 annual Memorial Week Celebration in memory of Comrade Roy R. Leazer Sr.

 

Reid-Hairston to be honored

Velveeta Reid-Hairston has been selected by the Khalif Court No. 90, Daughters of Greensboro, as one of four honorees to receive the PHA Service of Excellence Award “Celebrating Character, Courage, and Commitment.”  The awards ceremony will be held on, Sunday, June 28 at  3 p.m., at the Khalif Event Center, located at 2000 East Wendover Ave., Greensboro.

Reid-Hairston holds a B.S. degree from Livingstone College and a master’s degree in Social Work  from  Norfol k State University. She is a social worker with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Services for the Blind, where she provides independent living service case management to blind and visually impaired consumers in the Guilford County area. She is also the administrative assistant and community programs coordinator at Hairston Funeral Home Inc., serving with her husband, Tommy H. Hairston Sr.  Reid-Hairston is the manager of Family Training and Assessment Services LLC.
