Former Salisbury High standout Eric Edwards, a rising sophomore at George Mason, shot 4-under 68 in Thursday’s first round of the Carolinas Amateur Championship.
The event is being held on the Farm Course at Greensboro Country Club.
Edwards is two shots off the pace. Three golfers shot 66s. Edwards made six birdies, two bogeys and 10 pars.
Former West Rowan standout Jake Kennedy, a rising sophomore at Gardner-Webb, shot 5-over 77.
Kennedy made two birdies, five bogeys, a double bogey and 10 pars.
Irish Creek
In the Southern Open at the Club at Irish Creek, Christian Brand is the leader after two rounds at 14-under 126.
Salisbury’s Frank Adams III has shot 65-67 — 132 and is tied for eighth.
Play continues Friday.
TYGA
Several golfers from Salisbury played in the Tarheel Youth Golf Association one- day tournament at Pilot Knob Country Club on Thursday.
Ben Childress won his 11-under age group with a 41.
Luke Graeber finished 10th in the 12-13 age group with a 104 for 18 holes.
Michael Childress won the 14-15 age group with a 68 and tied for medalist honors.
Christopher Queen shot a 75 to finish tied for 6th in the 16-18 age group.
Will Casmus tied for 12th in the 16-18 age group with a 78.
Foxwood
Two members at Foxwood Golf Course aced medium-length par-threes.
Doug Shehan got his hole-in one on the 180-yard No. 9 hole with a 4-hybrid. Tracy Hinson witnessed the shot.
Carl Moore Sr. drained his tee shot on the 160-yard No. 14 hole with a 6-iron. Moore’s wife, Patsy, witnessed the feat.
Corbin Hills
Qualifying rounds for the Horace Billings Rowan Amateur will be played on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The low 31 qualifiers and defending champion Eric Mulkey will advance to championship match play on July 17-19.
McCanless
The 3rd Junior Mac Summer Series 9-Hole Tournament was held at McCanless on Thursday.
Austin Miller won with a 41, while Alex Miller shot 44.
Austin Miller had the longest drive on No. 4.
The next tournament will be held on Thursday, July 23, at 2 p.m.
Warrior
Entries open Friday for the Rowan Junior Open.

Minor leagues
One night after the Kannapolis Intimidators shut out Charleston, the RiverDogs returned the favor with Thursday’s 1-0 win over Kannapolis.
Kannapolis (7-8, 42-42) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with the team’s third shutout loss of 2015.
Charleston broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth when Austin Aune led off with a triple and scored on a squeeze bunt by Derek Toadvine.
Kannapolis’s road trip continues at Charleston on Friday.

Junior Legion
West Rowan Junior Legion won 4-3 at Carson on Thursday in the first game of a best-of-three, second-round series.
West Rowan was led by Dillon Simpson with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Travis Cone and Luke Waggoner had RBIs. Olen Stamper had a double.
Cole Hales picked up the win in relief of Daniel Durham.
Maddux Holshouser pitched six innings for Carson and took the loss.
Pearce Wilhelm and Luke Barringer had two hits each for Carson. Ben Shoaf had a double.
Game 2 is Friday at West Rowan High at 7 p.m.

Wood bat leagues
Andy Austin (East Rowan, UNC Wilmington) is now with the Wilmington Sharks of the Coastal Plain League.
Austin went 2-for-3 with two RBIs on Sunday in a 7-5 win against Wilson.
• Will Albertson (Catawba) hit his second homer in CPL play for Asheboro on Tuesday in a 4-3 win against Peninsula.
Albertson is batting .265 with 17 RBIs.
