As part of Cheerwine’s “Local Legends, National Treasures” promotion, two well-known barbecue restaurants in Lexington will be honored during today’s lunch hour.

Cheerwine’s Legend Hunter, Bo Stevenson, will visit Lexington Barbecue at 100 Smokehouse Lane today at noon and Speedy’s Barbecue, at 1317 Winston Road, at 1 p.m.

After Stevenson visits the Triad area, he’s heading to other parts of North Carolina ending up in Salisbury in early August to find more Local Legends, National Treasures.

The legend hunter has visited Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile, Ala.; Jackson, Miss.; Nashville, Memphis and Knoxville, Tenn.; Louisville, Ky., and Raleigh/Durham.

He has recognized BBQ joints, breakfast spots and lunch counters. He also checked out up-and-coming bands at local music venues and discovered other local legends.

Cheerwine is making an effort to discover and celebrate  legendary places and people that are truly authentic, independent and unduplicated.

Stevenson, who is not a celebrity, but an average Joe, will share many of his most interesting local discoveries in a series of “webisodes” on social and digital media.

Cheerwine is encouraging people to help him by visiting cheerwine.com/locallegends and nominating cherished local individuals, institutions and traditions as “Local Legends, National Treasures.”

Visitors to the site can also vote for those most deserving of “legend” status, or discover must-see treasures for their next road trip. Fans of local legends also can post their nominations to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #cheerwinelocallegend.
