Qualifying for the 62nd annual Crowder/Dorsett Labor Day 4-Ball Tournament began on Friday at the Country Club of Salisbury.

The Friday schedule was relatively light as just 29 of the 136 two-person teams hit the course for their qualifying scores.  Today and Sunday will see much heavier play, as qualifying will conclude, in preparation for next weekend’s tournament.

Qualifying was scheduled to begin this morning at 8 a.m.

Chad Campbell, golf professional at the club, is overseeing his first Labor Day tournament, along with event chairman Jake Alexander. Campbell joined the club in February.

“When you think of a county golf tournament, you really don’t think of 270 players signing up, which tells you something about this tradition,” said Campbell. “Everybody looks forward to the Labor Day event here at the club. It’s about the history, it’s about holding that crown, having those bragging rights, whether it’s the 10th flight or the overall  championship. There’s a lot a pride in the fact that the event has gone on as long as it has.”

The low score on Friday was 69 — shot by the teams of Clay Kilgore and David Miller and Frederick Corriher and Christopher McCoy. Corriher and McCoy are former champions of the Labor Day tournament, winning it in 1994 when both were 17 years old.

Two more teams carded 70s on Friday, Corey Basinger and Scott Brady, and Ken Clarke and Chris Owens.

Chip Comadoll and Will Casmus qualified with a 71 and they were followed by three teams with 73s — Richard Dwiggins-Brian Kennerly, Ryan Stout-Seth Waller and Ethan Free-Tim Free.

Other scores in the 70s turned in on Friday were: Brandon Cranfield-Clay Watson (75), Bob Boltz-Mike Suter (76), Barry Curlee-Travis Kluttz (77), Gene and Aaron Mothershead (77), Jacob Alexander-Garrett Gardner (77) and Robert Jackson-Brandon Shirley (78).

In the Women’s Division, only one team qualified on Friday — Kristi Laton and Phyllis Durland carded a 72.

All three teams from the Super Senior Division that played on Friday qualified with scores in the 70s. Tim McCulloh and Harold Morris Jr. shot a 72, as did Dean Harwood and Ed Hinshaw. John DeRhodes and Mallory McDaniel had a 75.
