South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was named MVP of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge after the Bulldogs beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 35-7.
Hargrave had 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. One of the sacks led directly to a pick-six by the Bulldogs.
The ESPN-televised contest was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning in the area.

College volleyball
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) is off to a good start for Belmont Abbey.
She had 23 kills and 45 digs in her first four matches. The Crusaders started 3-1.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The first-place team was Frank Foster, David Huneycutt and Walt & Kim Kincaid.
Finishing second was the team of John King and Gene & Mary Seaford
Huneycutt won closest to the pin. King won longest putt.

College soccer
Catawba’s women beat USC Aiken 2-0 on Sunday night to give Nick Brown his first win as a college head coach.
Becky Frost and Shay Passantino scored for the Indians.

Intimidators
Cody Daily drove in two runs, but the Kannapolis Intimidators lost to West Virginia 8-3 on Sunday.
