Area Sports Briefs: Carson and Salisbury football play tonight

Carson (1-0) and Salisbury (1-1) will make up their football game that was postponed on Friday by weather issues tonight at 7 p.m. at Carson.
College football
South Carolina State defensive lineman Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was named MVP of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge after the Bulldogs beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 35-7.
Hargrave had 2.5 sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. One of the sacks led directly to a pick-six by the Bulldogs.
The ESPN-televised contest was delayed nearly two hours due to lightning in the area.

Guilford’s Adam Smith (Davie) had eight catches for 158 yards and three TDs in a romp against Greensboro College.

Limestone’s Logan Stoodley (West Rowan) made five tackles in a 69-0 win against College of Faith.

Quentin Sifford (West Rowan) had a sack for West Liberty in a 29-28 win against Concord.

Charleston has moved John Knox (Salisbury) to free safety. He had eight tackles in opening win against Notre Dame College.
Redshirt freshman Johnny Delahoussaey (A.L. Brown) had a 44-yard reception for Charleston — his first college catch.

Lenoir-Rhyne’s Calvin Edwards (East Rowan) broke a 72-yard TD run in the Bears’ opening win against West Chester.

Emmanuel Gbunblee (West Rowan) had six tackles in Tusculum’s opening win against Virginia-Wise.
Gbunblee had two tackles for loss, including a sack.

UNC’s Romar Morris (Salisbury) had two carries for 20 yards in the Tar Heels’ loss to South Carolina.

Dontae Gilbert (Carson) made six tackles in Averett’s opener — a loss to Washington & Lee.
Hobie Proctor (West Rowan) kicked five PATs and averaged 58 yards on kickoffs.
Gilbert and Proctor are captains this season.
College volleyball
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) is off to a good start for Belmont Abbey.
She had 23 kills and 45 digs in her first four matches. The Crusaders started 3-1.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The first-place team was Frank Foster, David Huneycutt and Walt & Kim Kincaid.
Finishing second was the team of John King and Gene & Mary Seaford
Huneycutt won closest to the pin. King won longest putt.
College soccer
Catawba’s women beat USC Aiken 2-0 on Sunday night to give Nick Brown his first win as a college head coach.
Becky Frost and Shay Passantino scored for the Indians.
Intimidators
Cody Daily drove in two runs, but the Kannapolis Intimidators lost to West Virginia 8-3 on Sunday.
