A ceremony honoring first responders who died as a result of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be held 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Salisbury-Rowan Firefighter’s Memorial.

“This is to never forget,” said Dan Peters, chaplain for the Salisbury Fire Department.

Participating in the ceremony will be representatives of the Salisbury Fire Department, Salisbury Police, Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Rowan County Emergency Services and Rowan County Rescue Squad.

Salisbury Police Lt. Andy Efird is the speaker for the service and will welcome and dismiss the gathering.

In between, those in attendance will hear from Mayor Paul Woodson, county commissioners Chairman Greg Edds and Police Chaplain Tom Teichroew.

Peters, the Honor Guard and Engineer Steve Carter will do the ringing of the bell, followed by a moment of silence.

Carroll Robinson, chaplain for Rowan Emergency Services, will present a roll call of people in the local firefighting, emergency services and law enforcement community who have died in the past year.

Members of the Rescue Squad will place a wreath at the memorial, and Brantley Shanks will play taps.

Sheriff’s Office Chaplain Mike Taylor will give the closing prayer.

A piece of steel recovered from the World Trade Center will be on display inside Fire Station 5 which, like the Firefighters Memorial, is beside Chestnut Hill Cemetery on South Main Street.
