CONCORD — Cloudy skies didn’t keep dedicated fair-goers away from the Cabarrus County Fair Saturday.

Held at the Cabarrus Arena and Event Center, the fair will continue through Saturday, Sept. 19.

From rides to business vendors to livestock exhibitions, the fair offers something for everyone. Tom and Linda Burton and their two children recently moved to the area from Alaska and came out to enjoy the festivities.

“It is good family time, Linda Burton said. “We are here to meet new people and experience the culture here.”

The family was most excited about the games and especially the food.

“The lines here move fast, and the weather here is very different from what we are used to,” Tom Burton said.

Inside the arena, equestrian shows, pig racing, and a petting zoo were among the attractions. Sand artist Greg Glenn of San Luis Obispo, Calif., spent the day constructing a huge monument, depicting the livestock to be seen at the fair.

“I have been sculpting for 28 years,” he said. “As a child, I spent way too much time on the beach, so I started building sand sculptures and eventually began competing in competitions.”

Glenn travels nationwide showcasing his art at fairs, conventions, parties and other events.

Today, the fair will be hosting a canned food drive from 1-3 p.m. Adults are asked to bring four canned items and two for children for free admission. The gates open at 1 p.m.

The Rowan County Fair begins Sept. 25 at the Rowan County Fairgrounds.
