Area Sports Briefs: Rusher good in first college tournament

Richmond freshman golfer Isabella Rusher (Salisbury) shot 74-75-81 — 230 in the Bucknell Invitational.
Rusher made an eagle-3 on a 499-yard hole on Saturday morning and also made four birdies in her first college event. She finished seventh and led Richmond to a third-place finish.

Appalachian State’s Lily Yatawara (Salisbury) shot 74-85-73 — 232 and tied for 26th in the William & Mary Invitational.
College volleyball
Brevard’s Hannah Elmore (Carson) had seven kills in a 3-1 loss to Wingate.

Belmont Abbey’s Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had four kills and 12 digs in a 3-1 win against Emmanuel.
Cloninger had 11 kills and 11 digs as the Crusaders won 3-2 against King.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played Texas Scramble on Sunday.
The winning team was Jay Owens, David Huneycutt, Phyllis Myers and Azalee Story.
The second-place team was Tim Earnhardt, Eileen Full and Gene & Mary Seaford
John King won closest to the pin. Story won longest putt.

In the American Legion Gene Auten Memorial Golf Tournament Held at Corbin Hills, the First Flight winners were Rick Wiles, Derek Lipe, Drue Davis and Wayne Bostian.
Second Flight winners were Kevin Auten, Jeff Austin, Duane Smyth and Barrett Powlas. Third Flight Winners were Steve Safrit Sr., Steve Safrit Jr., Matt Marsh and Craig Garner.
Closest to the pin on No. 2 was Jonathan Seamon. Closest to the pin on No. 5 was Jimmy Goodman. Randy Bingham won closest to the pin on No. 13. Henry Morgan won closest to the pin on No. 16.
Rick Ridenhour won longest putt on No. 9. Mike Herndon was the Half and Half winner on No. 13.
Rockwell Christian
Rockwell Christian beat Oak Level 3-1 in varsity volleyball. Allison Miller had 12 kills, while Abbie Hoehman had 10.
Rockwell swept South Charlotte Christian. Jennifer Miller had 20 assists.

Rockwell Christian’s soccer team won 5-0 against Monroe’s First Assembly. Michael Hoehman scored two goals. Collin Teodorovici, Landon Hall and Alex Miller had one apiece.
Prep volleyball
Gray Stone (7-0, 2-0 YVC)) beat Queens Grant 25-6, 25-11 and 2-13 to stay undefeated.
Megan Frick had 11 kills. Shannon Efird had 10 kills and 4 blocks. Roni Boss had 12 assists.
Prep golf
East Rowan’s Ben Rollins has committed to play golf at North Carolina Wesleyan.
Catawba athletics
Catawba’s men’s soccer team lost 2-1 in overtime to Mars Hill on Saturday night. Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) scored his third goal of the season for the Indians.
The contest was physically played with Catawba (2-3, 1-1) committing 16 fouls, and Mars Hill called for 13. Seven yellow cards were issued.

Catawba’s women’s soccer team won 3-2 against Mars Hill on Saturday at Frock Field.
Hannah Cruse, Emily Davis and Kristina Hoff scored for Catawba (3-2, 2-0 SAC). Hannah Russell and Allison Baucom (West Rowan) had assists. Angelica Pawlowski made five saves.

Catawba’s tennis teams split with Belmont Abbey at Johnson Tennis Center.
The Catawba women claimed a 5-4 victory while the Catawba men fell 6-3.

Catawba’s volleyball team took a 25-23, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-22 SAC win against Lincoln Memorial on Saturday at Goodman Gym.
Catawba (5-6, 2-2) got double-figure kills from Alex Hopper, Audrey Hoffman and McKenzie Garrison.

Catawba swimming is offering a learn-to-swim program for youth, starting on Sept. 22.
The lessons will be taught by the Catawba swim team and will run from Sept. 22 through Oct. 22.
