Lyerly Evangelical missions conference

ROCKWELL — “On Wings of Prayer” is the theme of the annual missions conference at Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, which begins today. Fourteen missionaries will be in attendance, and another will participate via Skype.

Larry Bradley will preach at the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday. He and his wife Pat minister in Southeast Asia. Two of the church’s missionaries who serve in Africa will also participate, Mawuli Togbi-Wonyo from Togo and Justin Sauder from Zambia.

The conference begins at 4:30 p.m. today and resumes at 8 a.m. on Sunday.

Dr. W.C. Gaither Jr., is pastor of the church, which supports 22 missionaries/ministries on a monthly basis.

 

World of Faith Outreach services

World of Faith Outreach Ministries is hosting a series of Appreciation Services through Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. nightly at 5370 Stokes Ferry Road.

 

Men’s Day at Word of Life Center

Word of Life Family Worship Center, 726 East Liberty St., will have a Men’s Day Celebration on Sunday during the 10 a.m. service. The guest speaker will be Evangelist Russ Hosey of Houston, Texas.

Rev. Hosey has served as evangelist, pastor, marriage counselor, chaplain, television and radio host, seminar instructor, song writer and recording artist. He was public relations director for KAIM Christian Radio; a Billy Graham affiliated station in Hawaii and as director of evangelism for a major church denomination in Illinois.

In 2012 Russ won the AMG “Duo of the Year” music award along with his late wife Sandy Hosey.

Communion class at Holy Cross Lutheran 

MOCKSVILLE — Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 1913 Hwy 601 S., will offer a First Holy Communion class on Sunday, at 10:15 a.m. and each Sunday throughout October. In addition, on Sundays in October will be a Bible study on marriage and the Bible. This will begin at 5 p.m. with a light supper.

COOLEEMEE — First Baptist Church of Cooleemee will celebrate homecoming on Sunday, Oct. 4. Pastor Chris Williams from Woodleaf Baptist will be the guest speaker for the 10:30 a.m. service, with special music by Risen Son. A covered dish dinner will be held on the grounds following the service.

Men and Womens’s Day at Northside Church of God

EAST SPENCER — Northside Church of God of Prophecy, 730 N. Long St., is celebrating Men’s and Women’s Day Sunday in the 11 a.m. service. The theme is “A Leader’s Steps are Ordered By God.”

First UCC celebrates world wide communon

First United Church of Christ, 207 W. Horah St., will join Christians around the world to celebrate World Wide Communion at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday. The Neighbors in Need offering will be received during the worship service.

WOW Wednesday returns beginning Oct. 7. The adult Bible study will begin at 11:30, and family Bible study will begin at 6:30. The book “The New Jim Crow” will be the focus of the Bible Study and copies are available for pick up in the church office.

Mt. Moriah’s Blessing of the Animals

Blessing of the Animals at Gloria Dei

On Sunday, Oct. 4, from 2 -4 p.m. Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1908 Statesville Blvd., will host a service to impart a blessing to our pets in honor of Saint Francis, who cared for all of God’s creatures.

All pets are welcome and must be on a leash or in a crate. Last year’s event drew cats, dogs and even a chicken with special guests from the Rowan Co. Human Society joining the event. Milford Hills Pumpkin Patch is open

The Milford Hills United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch, 630 Statesville Blvd., is open Monday-Friday noon-6 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m.– 6 p.m. from Oct. 2-30 (closing at 3 p.m. Oct 30).

Money raised supports missions, local and beyond. The pumpkins come from a Navajo Reservation in New Mexico, providing employment on the reservation.

A spot is available for families to take photos. New this year: a Fun Fair on Saturday Oct. 17, from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. with free children’s’ games, bouncy house, baked and canned goods, crafts to buy and do, as well as coffee and donuts in the morning and hot dogs at lunch. Grace Lutheran annual fish fry

Grace Lutheran Church’s seventh annual fish fry fundraiser is Saturday, Oct. 10 from 4 p.m. until.

This year’s recipient is Ava Reece, a 4-year-old from Kannapolis who is battling Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Catawba’s first choral concert of the 2015-16 season is Sunday

The choirs of Catawba College will present their first concert of the 2015-2016 academic year at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in Omwake-Dearborn Chapel on campus. The program, “Out of This World,” will feature music with themes related to realms beyond our own.

A wide variety of musical styles and texts featuring the heavens, the moon, and stars will be offered by the Catawba Singers, the Catawba Chamber Choir and Catawba PopAC, as well as musical accompaniments including a percussion ensemble, guitar and bass, piano, celeste, and even wine glasses.

Catawba’s newest ensemble, PopAC, will premier two new arrangements written by fellow students Conway Hahne and Caleb Garner.

Student conductors Robert Thornton and Hunter Safrit will be leading the ensembles in several selections.

The Catawba Choirs are under the direction of Dr. Phillip E. Burgess, Assistant Professor of Music, and accompanied by Jacob Hahn and Susan Trivette.
