Auditions for ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play’
Lee Street theatre is looking for an ensemble of six male and female actors with the ability to portray varying ages and characters with their voice. Imaginative storytellers a must and singers a bonus. Performance dates: Dec. 10-13 and 17-19. Rehearsals start Nov. 1. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script with possible improvisational exercises. If you can sing, please sing five measures, a cappella from your favorite Christmas Carol. Now accepting applications for all things crafty for the annual Fall Festival at Department of Veterans Affairs. Held at 1601 Brenner Ave. on Oct. 23, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the gym. Free genealogy for beginners class
On Saturday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. at RPL Headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St., a beginning genealogy class will be presented by the Genealogical Society of Rowan County and the Edith M. Clark History Room at Rowan Public Library. Members of the Genealogical Society and History Room staff will provide an overview of essential records like census records, marriage records and death certificates — what these documents will look like, where can they be found, what information they can provide and what clues they offer for finding further resources. The class will examine some of the best websites and databases to use as well as information like cost, emphasis or access for particular websites. A tour of the history room’s resources will follow. 18th century Colonial Fair at Fort Dobbs Sept. 26-27
STATESVILLE — Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will offer a chance to step back in time and experience life on the frontier of 250 years ago. During this Colonial Fair visitors will encounter re-enactors portraying the soldiers, settlers and American Indians who lived in western North Carolina during the French and Indian War and learn about their lives, occupations and past times. Demonstrations at this family-friendly event will include historic trades, cooking, weapons firings, music, games and more. The program runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 and children under 5 are free. Fort Dobbs is located at 438 Fort Dobbs Road. Fort Dobbs is the only state historic site dedicated to the French and Indian War period (1754-1763.)
Theatre professionals to be inducted into Blue Masque Hall of Fame
The theatre arts department alumni being honored at Catawba College’s homecoming include Broadway musical theatre performer Ashton Byrum ’91; Disney World headliner, magician Terry Ward ’86; Salisbury native and theatre production designer Richard Seagle ’78; and popular actress and playwright (“Dirty Barbie and Other Girlhood Tales”) Denise Stewart ’95.
Byrum, Ward, Seagle, and Stewart will be inducted into Catawba’s Blue Masque Theatre Hall of Fame at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 23 in Hedrick Little Theatre. Tickets are $25 at 704-637-4394.
Michael Reno Harrell in concert at RPL on Tuesday
Rowan Public Library will host a free concert featuring the popular songwriter and storyteller Michael Reno Harrell on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m.
The event will be held at RPL headquarters, 201 W. Fisher St. Harrell is an award winning songwriter as well as a veteran storyteller and entertainer from the Southern Appalachian Mountains. He has been the Featured Teller at the National Storytelling Festival and Teller In Residence at the International Storytelling Center. He has performed at major music events such as MerleFest and the Walnut Valley Festival.
The event will be in the Stanback Auditorium. Admission is free thanks to sponsorship by the Friends of Rowan Public Library.

Grand piano finale
The seven “Come Tickle Our Ivories” pianos are nearing the end of their five-month run along Main Street in Salisbury, and to make sure they enjoy and celebratory exit, a Grand Piano Finale is planned to coincide with Downtown Salisbury’s Friday Night Out on Oct. 2 when shops are open late and folks fill the streets. Churches and other entertainers scheduled so far include St. John’s Lutheran Church, Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, voice coach and pianist Frances McGill. Save the date!
