China Grove — Rumors of a Walmart coming to town are just that — rumors.

The building construction off of U.S. 29 near Bostian Road is a new medical office for Novant Health. Once finished, the building will house the staff of Novant Health Primary Care South Rowan, currently located on Thom Street.

Plans for a new medical office in China Grove had been in the works for years. Last year, the announcement was made that construction was set to begin in 2014.

When completed, the building will serve as offices for Dr. Trevor Allison and Dr. Holly Stevens

Office manager Candace Welch said the staff should be moved into the new office by March if things go as planned. She said she has heard about the Walmart rumors too. It seems people in the town thought the building was going to be a Walmart Neighborhood Market, a chain of grocery stores that Walmart Inc. started in the late 1990s.

Need to “clear the air,” Welch said.

The construction is being done by Magnolia Construction LLC of Winston-Salem.
