The Board of Education will discuss low performing schools and high graduation rates at the work session on Monday.

The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will be meeting in the Long Street Board Room on 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer at 4 p.m.

The board will talk about annually identifying low-performing school administrative units.

According to the North Carolina General Assembly, a low-performing school is one that fails to meet minimum growth standards and has a majority of its students performing below grade level.

The board will discuss developing a plan to improve the identified schools, which would be made available to the public. The public would also be able to submit written comments.

Last month, 19 out of 35 schools in the Rowan-Salisbury system received a D or F letter grade on an evaluation of performance.

Superintendent Lynn Moody said those designations did not accurately reflect RSS classrooms, and that the schools need more time to acclimate to the new strategic plan.

The board will also be discussing the RSS graduation rate. According to provided documents, almost all high schools saw an increase in their graduation rates.

There will also be an update on the strategic plan and discussion on Salisbury High School’s safety projects, including adding another school resource officer and fencing around the school.
