Area Sports Briefs: Storey competes in marathon

Salisbury High graduate Katelyn Storey ran a time of 3:32.37 in the recent Chicago Marathon.
Storey, 20, was running in her fourth marathon and posted one of the top-10 marathon times recorded by a local woman.
Storey had competed in Charlotte, Charleston and Richmond marathons.
Prep golf
Regional golf tournaments will be held today.
In the 3A Central Regional at Greensboro National, Cox Mill, Hickory Ridge and East Rowan have three or more golfers competing and will post team scores.
Both Carson and Concord have two individuals competing. South Rowan, Central Cabarrus and Robinson have one apiece.
Salisbury, Gray Stone and West Davidson will post team scores, and East Davidson has two individuals competing in the 1A/2A Central Regional at Cross Creek in Mount Airy.
The triple bogey maximum rule is not in use.
The top three teams in each regional qualify for the state tournament. Also qualifying will be the top 17 individuals not on a qualifying team.
Salisbury has won four straight 1A/2A state championships. Salisbury senior Grace Yatawara is the defending individual champ.
Prep cross country
The SPC Cross Country Championships will be held Tuesday at Vietnam Veterans Park in Concord.
The boys race is at 4 p.m. The girls race is at 4:30 p.m. There will be a jayvee race (boys and girls) at 5:15 p.m.

The CCC Cross Country Championships will start at 5 p.m. at Boone’s Cave Park in Lexington on Tuesday.
Prep volleyball
Conference tournaments start today.
In the CCC, No. 5 Thomasville is at No. 4 East Davidson and No. 6 Lexington is at No. 3 Salisbury.

No. 1 Carson hosts No. 8 Northwest Cabarrus at 4:30 p.m. today. No. 5 East Rowan takes on No. 4 Robinson in the second match of the day at Carson.
No. 7 West Rowan is at No. 2 Cox Mill at 4:30 p.m., and No. 6 South Rowan plays No. 3 Hickory Ridge in today’s second match at Cox Mill.
Prep tennis
The dual team tennis state playoffs will start Tuesday. Pairings will be announced today.
Local golf
The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
Terrol Kendall, Dylan Owens, Susan Houston and Gene & Mary Seaford were the winning team. The team of Jay Owens, Azalee Story, David Huneycutt, Jan Godwin and Harry Owen placed second.
Owens won closest to the pin.
College football
Wingate’s 24-14 win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday came on homecoming in Hickory and ended the Bears’ 22-game SAC winning streak.
“On offense, we were able to control the line of scrimmage,” Wingate head football coach Joe Reich said.. “We felt like our offense could run the ball and hit the intermediate and deep throws. The ability to control the line of scrimmage was huge. This allowed us to control the clock and rest our defense. Everything worked together for us.”
Former Mallard Creek standout Lawrence Pittman rushed for 205 yards for the Bulldogs.
College swimming
Limestone defeated visiting Catawba.
The men’s team won 136-105, while the women’s team won 126.5-90.5.
