Salisbury’s Kayla Honeycutt won her first two matches in the 2A individual state tournament in Cary on Friday. Honeycutt won 6-0, 6-0 against Lake Norman Charter’s Tiffany Onia in the first round and defeated Rebecca Lui of N.C. Science & Math 6-1, 6-0 in a quarterfinal.
Honeycutt will play Shelby’s Nancy Bridges in a 9 a.m. semifinal on Saturday. The winner of that match plays Caroline Cowan (Kill Devil Hills First Flight) or Jessica Ille (Carrboro) for the championship.
• In 2A doubles, Salisbury’s Maria Capito-Julia Honeycutt defeated Newton-Conover’s Brittany Connor-Lauren Dillard 6-4, 7-5 in the first round. Beddingfield’s Caroline Smith-Haley Beamon defeated Capito-Honeycutt 6-1, 6-3 in a quarterfinal.
Salisbury’s Grace Steinman-Kathryn Rusher defeated Hendersonville’s Haley Fair-Amy Yarborough 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. Steinman-Rusher (Salisbury) defeated Science & Math’s Anna Xu-Rachel Xu 6-4, 6-1 in a quarterfinal.
Steinman-Rusher will play Lake Norman Charter’s Hannah Archer-Olivia Archer on Saturday at 9 a.m. in a semifinal. The winner of that match plays Beddingfield’s Smith-Beamon or Science & Math’s Lydia Yuan-Sara Yuan for the championship.
• Carson’s doubles team of Laura Isenhour-Sara Lentz lost to Asheville’s Sena Mucklow-Kristie Kim 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the individual state tournament on Friday in Burlington.
• In the 1A tournament in Cary, Gray Stone’s Meghan Hedgepeth-Brooke Herlocker defeated Tarboro’s Kaylyn Norville-Hanna Whitehurst 6-0, 6-2 in a quarterfinal.
In a semifinal, Hedgepeth-Herlocker defeated Pine Lake Prep’s Lexi Yakoobian-Sierra Lunsford 6-0, 6-3.
Hedgepeth-Herlocker play Saturday for the championship against Community School of Davidson’s Courtney Mudge-Marisa Deininger.
Jayvee football
A.L. Brown won 32-26 against Mallard Creek on Thursday.
College volleyball
Catawba Valley Community College won 3-0 against Louisburg.
Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had 16 kills, 14 digs and three aces. Tiffany Brooks (South Rowan) had eight kills.
• Livingstone (17-9) swept Voorhees on Thursday 25-13, 25-11, 25-8.
Parks and Rec
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department has extended registration for youth basketball for boys, ages 7-15, through Nov. 1.
