Business roundup: Gary Thornburg joins Quick Copy

Bob Bailey, president, has announced that Gary Thornburg has joined the staff of Quick Copy Print Shop.
Thornburg will be employed in the pre-press department where he will oversee the proofing department. He will also be responsible for digital reproduction, both black and white and color.
Thornburg has appeared in many Piedmont Players and St. Thomas Players productions, and is looking forward to his debut with Lee Street theater this Christmas season. He also portrayed Lord Salisbury for several years.
Thornburg is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where he is a leader of morning prayer and lay reader at the monthly evensong service. He is also a member of the Friends of the Rowan Public Library. He enjoys solving crossword puzzles, playing bridge and reading.
“I feel blessed to live in Salisbury and have many wonderful friends, especially in my neighborhood. I look forward to assisting the entire community with all its printing and copying needs,” Thornburg said.
Bailey said the management team of Quick Copy Print is excited about adding Thornburg to the team mix and plans to use his talents to contribute to all areas of the business.

Cleveland employee earns scholarship
James Little, town of Cleveland, received the UNC School of Government (SOG) Scholarship award through the Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU). He will use the scholarship to attend the Foundations in Planning and Development Regulation course at the SOG at UNC-Chapel Hill.
“The credit union is proud to partner with the School of Government to offer these scholarships to North Carolina’s local government employees,” said LGFCU President Maurice Smith. “As a result, these LGFCU members are able to strengthen their skills and enhance their job performance, thereby better serving their communities.”
The SOG is the largest university-based local government training, advisory and research organization in the United States, offering up to 200 classes, seminars, schools and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year.

Catawba’s Career Services director elected president of Career Consortium
Catawba College’s Director of Career Services, Robin Perry, has been elected president of the Career Consortium of Metrolina Colleges. She will serve a two-year term for this group of career development professionals from private colleges and universities in the Charlotte/Metrolina area of North Carolina.
The mission of the organization is to increase students’ networking opportunities with employers and to offer employers an efficient way to recruit from the member institutions. Members of the consortium include Belmont Abbey College, Gardner-Webb University, Johnson & Wales University, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Livingstone College, Pfeiffer University, St. Andrews University, Wingate University and Catawba College.
The consortium organizes and hosts the Metrolina Career Fair each November in Charlotte. Recent fairs have been held at Johnson & Wales University with more than 65 employers and graduate school representatives there to hire students for opportunities, both full time and internships. More than 240 students and alumni have attended from all member colleges/universities.
“As an organized group, we can bring many more highly regarded companies to the career fair then each campus individually,” says Perry. “It is an excellent opportunity for all our students to be able to meet over 60 employers under one roof, all looking for top college/university talent. Students need to take advantage of this chance to learn about careers and apply for jobs or grad school.”
Meeting each month, the consortium members plan for the Career Fair in addition to sharing best practices and visiting each campus.
“The exchange of ideas and practices among these professionals helps each member grow in their profession,” Perry said. “I am honored to work with each of them and look forward to providing the best for all our students.”
Food for Thought benefits children
As an October Tour sponsor, Arey Realty set up a Food For Thought fund-raising booth on Bank Street next to the food vendors. Hundreds of home-made cookies, home grown tomatoes and peppers were given away in exchange for donations from visitors. Proceeds were presented to Food For Thought this week. Food For Thought is a local backpack program providing nutritious weekend food to food-insecure children in local schools.
Sedberry returns to Emporium
Andrew McMillan, a native of Salisbury, recently became a licensed CPA through the state of North Carolina.
He works for Brent Parks CPA PA and has for the past several years. He specializes in individual and corporate taxation, consulting, bookkeeping, payroll and other accounting services.
He majored in business at Catawba College and received a master’s degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
McMillan completed all four parts of the CPA exam and was approved/licensed by the N.C. State Board in September.
He is married to Lainey Edwards McMillan who played volleyball for Catawba College where they met. They recently welcomed their first child, Emery Dee McMillan.
