North Rowan, Salisbury, East Rowan and South Rowan were eliminated from the volleyball state playoffs in Saturday’s first round.
Salisbury lost to second-seeded Wheatmore 25-17, 25-19 and 25-10 in the 2A playoffs.
“We fought hard and played with heart the entire game,” Salisbury coach Mallory Hodge said.
Juliana Anderson led the Hornets with 12 kills, seven digs and six blocks.
De’Leon Duren had three kills and three blocks. Abby Lee had 11 digs. Jane Miller had three kills and nine digs.
Rebecca Malloy had two aces and five digs. Makayla Dillon had seven assists, and Lila Harry had six assists.

North Rowan lost at home to South Stokes in a 16 vs. 17 matchup in the 2A playoffs.
The scores were 29-27, 25-18 and 25-15.
“We played with a lot of intensity and made some amazing digs,” North coach Sandy Lytton said. “We could have won that first set, but we didn’t, and we were playing from behind after that.”

South Rowan, seeded 28th, lost 26-24, 25-14 and 25-17 to No. 5 seed Asheville A.C. Reynolds in the 3A playoffs.

No. 23 seed East Rowan lost in Waxhaw to 10th-seeded Cuthbertson in the 3A playoffs.
Scores were 25-16, 25-18 and 25-14.

In other action on Sunday, ninth-seeded Cox Mill swept Sun Valley to advance, and 14th-seeded Hickory Ridge swept Western Guilford to advance.
Hickory Ridge, which finished third in the SPC, will play at Carson on Tuesday.
Robinson, the SPC’s No. 4 team, was swept by North Iredell.
CCC champ West Davidson advanced in 2A with a five-set win against Surry Central.
East Davidson was swept by East Rutherford .

D-II athletics
Catawba country teams competed in the SAC Championships at the Wasioto Winds Golf Course on Saturday.
The Catawba men finished sixth and the the women were seventh.
Catawba’s Abbie Adams was the SAC Freshman of the Year and first team all-conference. She placed sixth in 19:00, a personal best and the third-best in Catawba history.
Queens won the men’s title, ending a 17-year run by Mars Hill. Mars Hill’s Alex Griggs (25:08) was the overall winner.

Carson-Newman’s Carson Wise kicked an 18-yard field goal in overtime, lifting the visiting Eagles to a 41-38 SAC victory over Wingate.
The teams combined for 889 yards of total offense (C-N 464, WU 425).

The top-ranked Pfeiffer men’s soccer team (15-0, 9-0 CC) remained perfect with a 3-0 victory at King on Saturday afternoon.
Nathan Regis scored all three goals for the Falcons.

Lincoln Memorial took a three-set win over Catawba in SAC volleyball on Saturday afternoon.
Lincoln Memorial improved to 10-11 overall and 7-8 in the SAC with a 25-15, 25-22 and 25-22 victory.
The Indians fell to 11-11 and 8-7.
McKenzie Garrison had seven kills for Catawba.

Catamounts roll
CULLOWHEE, N.C. — Troy Mitchell threw for 352 yards and two touchdowns, and Corey Holloway ran for two more as Western Carolina roared past Samford for a 56-36 victory Saturday.
The game ended with a wild fourth quarter where the teams scored a combined 41 points, capped by Spearman Robinson’s 49-yard return of a failed Samford onside kick attempt with 46 seconds left.

Charlotte falls
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nick Mullens threw touchdown passes to four different receivers and Mike Thomas topped 100 yards receiving for a school-best fifth straight game, leading Southern Mississippi to a 44-10 victory over Charlotte in the first ever matchup of these teams on Saturday
Thomas hauled in a 69-yard pass from Mullens to start the Golden Eagles offensive onslaught, which scored 30 straight points after Charlotte’s first-quarter field goal. Thomas finished with six catches for 105 yards. Casey Martin, Korey Robertson and Taylor Marini also had touchdown catches for Southern Miss (5-3, 3-1).
