Area Sports Briefs: Catawba football 4th in region

Catawba’s football team (6-2) is ranked fourth in the initial Super Region Two poll that was released on Monday.
The region includes teams from the SAC, Gulf South and SIAC.
Seven will make the playoffs, with the top seed getting a first-round bye. The second, third and fourth seeds will host a first-round game.
The top three teams in the region are West Georgia, Tuskegee and North Alabama.
Carson-Newman is ranked sixth, while Wingate is seventh.

The CIAA is in Super Region One. Bowie State is ranked second in that region, while Virginia Union is ranked seventh.
Charleston (W. Va.) is ranked third. Former Salisbury QB John Knox is a safety for Charleston.

SAC players of the week were Mars Hill wideout Gilbert Johnson. Mars Hill DB Carl Mattox and Carson-Newman kicker Carson Wise.

In the BOXTOROW HBCU poll, North Carolina A&T is No.1, followed by Grambling, Alcorn State and Bethune-Cookman.
College golf
Catawba stands ninth after the opening round of the Matt Dyas Invitational, hosted by West Georgia at Oak Mountain.
Catawba opened with a 313 total on Monday and is 19 shots back of leader Young Harris.
Catawba freshman Trey Burton fired a 73 and is in seventh place.

Sophomore Victoria Hedrick leads Catawba’s women’s golf team after the opening round of the Flagler Fall Slam at Marsh Creek Country Club.
Hedrick shot 86 on Monday.
College soccer
Catawba’s men are hosting Pfeiffer, unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Division II, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Prep football
The NCHSAA announced game times for the football championship games.
Games will be played at BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh and Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill.
Kenan will host two games, 3A at 7:35 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, and 3AA at 12:05 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12,
The schedule at Carter-Finley will have Saturday games starting with the 4AA championship at 12:05 p.m., followed by the 2A final at 4:05 p.m., and the 2AA championship at 8:05 p.m.
At BB&T Field, Saturday games will include the 1AA contest at 12:05 p.m., the 1A final at 4:05 p.m. and the 4A championship at 8:05 p.m.
Prep soccer
Salisbury beat North Rowan 9-0 and celebrated the careers of 10 seniors in the final regular-season home match on Monday.
This SHS senior class improved to 84-11-3 in their collective careers, including a 33-1 mark in the Central Carolina Conference (with two matches remaining before the playoffs).
Nine different seniors scored on Monday.
Scoring goals were Joshua Lynch, Jared Ramirez, Reilly Gokey, Matt Washko, Kevin Flores, Landon Goodman, Cristian Uribe, Ahmedin Salcinovic and Arturo Ramirez.
Senior Bryan Fragoso tallied two assists for Salisbury.
Other assists went to Arturo Ramirez, Flores, Gokey, Washko and Lynch.
Freshman Josh Faulker had the shutout in goal.
Salisbury hopes to get in another game tonight at North.
Gametime is set for 6 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Hornets play at second-place Lexington to close the regular season.
Prep volleyball
Carson is home tonight at 6 p.m. against Hickory Ridge in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.
Third-seeded Carson is 26-2, while 14th-seed Hickory Ridge is 17-6.
Davie plays at Charlotte Catholic, while Gray Stone is at Mount Airy. Cox Mill hosts Hickory St. Stephens.
Prep tennis
First-round pairings are set for the individual tennis state championships that will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Salisbury (13-1) will play at home today, weather permitting, against West Lincoln (12-1) in the second round of the 2A dual team state playoffs.
The Hornets had hoped to play Monday but were washed out.
Parks and Rec
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department has extended its youth boys basketball for ages 7-15 registration to October 30.
