3A cross country
Carson’s boys placed second out of 24 teams in the 3A Midwest Regional on Saturday at Charlotte’s McAlpine Greenway and qualified for next Saturday’s state championships.
Zachary Marchinko led the Cougars. Competing despite illness he gutted out an eighth-place finish in 16:27.
Dylan Koontz (16th, 16:43. Garrett Ingold (18th, 16:46), Grant Doby (23rd, 16:56) and Nick Cox (26th, 17:04), Jonah Evans (17:55) and Harrison Doby (19:00) were the other runners for Carson.
Weddington’s score of 21 won the regional.
Andrew Burgess (43rd. 17:32) led West Rowan runners. Sean Incardona (44th, 17:34) led East Rowan runners.
East Rowan finished ninth, while West Rowan was 10th.

Carson’s Taylor Wiggins (24th, 20:36) was an individual state qualifier.
Carson finished ninth. Jesse Nichols (39th, 21:21), Olivia Gabriel (22:46), Hannah Venable (22:58) and Kelly Short (23:45) rounded out Carson’s top five.
Leading East Rowan was Faith Faller (26th, 20:41). Leading West Rowan was Josie Heglar (33rd, 21:15). Micah Helms (24:27) was the top runner for South Rowan.
Faith Blume (22:21) also had a strong race for East.
Marvin Ridge won the regional.
Northwest Cabarrus placed fifth.

2A cross country
Salisbury’s boys placed second in the 3A Midwest Regional held Saturday in Kernersville and qualified for next Saturday’s state championships at Kernersville’s Ivey M. Redmon Park.
Matt Washko (19th, 18:16), Alex Yang (21st, 18:24), Keegan Dillon (31st, 18:51), Reilly Gokey (37th, 19:06) and Roarke Burton (54th, 19:35) led the Hornets.
Garrett Jennings (25:1) led the North Rowan boys.
CATA won the regional.

Ellen Simons (18th, 21:54), Mary Kauffman (32nd, 22:43) and Amelia Steinman (26:48) led the Salisbury girls.
Meghan Karczewski (24:57) and Aubree Cain (25:51) were the top runners for North Rowan.
West Stanly won the regional.

Prep football
In South Rowan’s 66-16 loss to Robinson on Friday, Brennan Lambert kicked a first-half field goal.
In the second half, Austin Chrismon threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Rary, and Michael Parks returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

Prep soccer
Salisbury’s soccer team finished off an undefeated regular season by winning 4-0 at Lexington on Friday.
Landon Goodman scored two goals. Bryan Fragoso and Ahmedin Salcinovic had one each.
Arturo Ramirez had the shutout in goal and made a save on a PK.
Starters Melvin Bonilla and Andrew Kalogeromitros returned to the lineup from injuries for Salisbury.
The Hornets (21-0-2, 10-0 CCC) are expected to be the No. 1 seed for the 2A West playoffs when pairings and seeds are announced.

Prep volleyball
Carson’s season ended with a 25-11, 25-20 and 25-19 loss at West Henderson in a 3A quarterfinal played on Saturday afternoon.
The third-seeded Cougars, SPC co-champs and SPC tournament champs, finished 28-3.
It was the last match for Carson seniors Morgan Hester, Jordan Osborne, Sarah Boyd, Kaytee Leonguerrero and Kristen Cauble.
Carson is 110-18 the past four seasons.

Prep girls tennis
In the 2A individual state championships in Cary, Olivia Archer and Hannah Archer of Lake Norman Charter made it two state championships in a row, sweeping past Kayla Honeycutt and Kathyrn Rusher of Salisbury 6-0, 6-0.
Lake Norman Charter had two singles players and two doubles teams qualify for the state championships. All advanced to Saturday’s semifinals.
Lake Norman Charter’s Lauren Bush finished runner-up to Maiden’s Zoe Huffman in singles.
Salisbury’s Honeycutt/Rusher team won in the semifinals 6-1, 6-1 against Lake Norman Charter’s Zoe Panizza/Emily Chrisman. Honeycutt/Rusher extended Salisbury’s streak to 10 straight years of competing in the singles or doubles final — or both.
3A
Adrienne Haynes of Asheville won her second straight singles crown. She beat Cox Mill’s Sarah Jiang 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Women’s soccer
Catawba’s women’s soccer season ended with a 1-0 loss at Lincoln Memorial on Saturday.
Catawba went 4-13 overall and 2-9 in the SAC.
Angelica Pawlowski made seven saves.

The Indians fell to 5-11 on the season and 3-8 in the conference.

College volleyball
Catawba swept Mars Hill 26-24, 25-13 and 26-24 on Saturday. Alex Hopper had a dozen digs. Erin Morant had nine kills with three blocks.
Catawba also beat Tusculum on Friday.

College football
Carson-Newman jumped out to a 42-7 halftime lead and beat Limestone 69-28 on Saturday. Coach Ken Sparks moved into a tie for fifth on the all-time wins list with 332.

Local golf

The McCanless Couples played their fall tournament on Saturday. Terrol Kendall and Susan Wydner took first place. Ricky Honeycutt and Beverly Cobb placed second. David Huneycutt and Azalee Story took third.
Story won closest to the pin on No. 3. Kendall won closest to the pin on No. 12.
Mary Seaford won longest putt on No. 7. Wydner won longest putt on No. 14.

Parks and Rec
The Salisbury Parks and Recreation is still accepting registrations for its boys basketball league for ages 7-15.
