Double Double Toil and Trouble

When I was playing with friends, very good bridge players, a convention came up that was new to me.

Unlike many conventions, this is one that often comes up and is useful. The Responsive Double is a take-out double and therefore indicates 2 suits. This is how it works.

Your LHO bids a minor suit. You bid your suit or you double. RHO raises partner’s minor suit. Your partner holds the 2 major suits or the 2 unbid suits, has 6-7 points so she can make the Responsive Double.

This tells you the 2 suits partner holds and how many points to count on from her. Now you can more reliably make a choice for your bid at a relatively low level with the hope to reach the right contract. Remember, pass is always an option.

Since the Charlotte Regional was in session, we had a small but lively group at Evergreen on Friday, Oct. 30. Winning: First, Ruth Bowles and Becky Creekmore; second, John and Myrnie McLaughlin; third, Joe O’Brien and Genny Mozolak.
