Chris Lankford, coach of the Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions, announced Wednesday that Hunter Shepherd will sign with Catawba’s baseball program on Nov. 11.
Shepherd has been outstanding as a first baseman/pitcher for the Stallions and has been a strong two-way player the past two summers for the Rowan County American Legion team.
The lefty was 5-1 on the mound for Rowan last summer. He batted .348 with two homers and 26 RBIs.

Prep soccer
Salisbury and Carson had their first-round playoff games postponed on Wednesday.
Carson will play at 5 p.m. at home today against North Iredell.

Prep tennis
Salisbury’s third-round playoff tennis match with Hendersonville was postponed by rain for the third straight day.
It’s been rescheduled for today at 4 p.m.

Church league hoops
The Hurley YMCA will conduct a senior high church league for grades 9-12.
Register by Nov. 16. The cost is $375 per team. A coaches meeting will be held on Nov. 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Prep volleyball
The 40th edition of the state volleyball championships is set for Saturday at the Raleigh Convention Center.
The opener is at noon and will send Asheboro (25-3) against South Iredell (26-1) for the 3A crown.
In the 4A match at 2:30, Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons (19-3) will take on Northwest Guilford (27-3).
Gibbons returns to the championship for an 11th consecutive year in three different classifications. This is the first time as a 4A school.
The 1A final at 5 p.m. features defending champ Princeton (27-1) against Alleghany (25-1).
South Granville (28-3) takes on Wheatmore (25-1) for the 2A championship at 7:30 pm.
Time Warner Cable will provide coverage, including live TV on the TimeWarner SportsChannel.

Coilege soccer
The SAC released all-conference teams on Wednesday.
Catawba’s Angelica Pawlowski and Alex Hulsey were honorable mention on the women’s team.
Catawba’s Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury) was honorable mention on the men’s team.

South Y hoops clinic
The South Rowan Y is accepting registrations for boys basketball for grades 3-8.
Registration is open until Dec. 5. Practice starts in mid-December. Games begin Jan. 9.

Registration is also open for Saturday skills clinics instructed by former South Rowan and Pfeiffer star and European professional Damien Argrett.
