Salisbury resident and financial advisor Charles Sowers was recognized at a reunion in one of the Kenan Stadium suites on Nov. 7 at the UNC-Duke football game in Chapel Hill.
Sowers, a member of the 1956 North Carolina freshman basketball team, was presented with a signed UNC basketball signed by former Tar Heel basketball stars Lenny Rosenbluth and Eric Montross.
Rosenbluth was the star of the 1957 UNC team that won the national championship, going 32-0. Due to a career-ending injury, Sowers missed a possible opportunity to play on that 1957 team.
Montross was a member of the 1993 Tar Heels, another national championship team. That team defeated Michigan’s “Fab Five” in the NCAA title game in New Orleans.
Sowers was a member of the 1955 Boyden High School team that played in doubleheader in Greensboro, prior to a UNC-Virginia game. Sowers presented Rosenbluth an original copy of the game program from that doubleheader.
Sowers attended the reunion with his wife, Beth, and daughter, Blair.
