Area Sports Briefs: Moir tourney dates set

The Sam Moir Christmas Classic is set for Dec. 28, 29 and 30 at Catawba’s Goodman Gym.
Pairings will be set based on overall winning percentages in games before Christmas.
Rowan-Salisbury athletic directors are in charge of the tournament.
There will be eight games daily, beginning at 9 a.m.
Adults can buy a tournament pass for $20.
The defending champs are the West Rowan boys and East Rowan girls.

East Rowan basketball will play at North Stanly on Monday, Nov. 16, and will host the Comets on Friday, Nov. 20.
Prep signings
Hunter Shepherd of the Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions signed with Catawba’s baseball program on Wednesday.

Prep soccer
The soccer state playoffs continue tonight with third-round contests.
Top-seeded Salisbury hosts No. 9 seed CATA at 6 p.m. in a 2A contest.
Tickets are $6, and only NCHSAA level passes will be accepted.
Third-seeded Carson hosts No. 6 Asheville in a 3A contest.
Prep tennis
The long-delayed girls 2A dual team tennis championship was finally decided on Wednesday afternoon at the Burlington Tennis Center.
Lake Norman Charter, the defending champion, won 5-1 over Durham’s North Carolina School of Science and Math.
Olivia Archer, No. 1 singles player for the winners, won 6-0, 6-1 and was named MVP.
Lake Norman Charter won 5-1 against Salisbury on Tuesday in the West final.
Catawba HOF
Jim Tomsula ‘90, head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, and Jim Gantt ‘89, head baseball coach who consistently leads Catawba teams to championships, are among the alumni Catawba will induct into its Sports Hall of Fame on Friday. Other inductees include Mike Reynolds ‘70 and Art Wade ‘98.
College swimming
Catawba’s Dominik Brus has been named the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Male Swimmer of the Week.
Brus won two events at the Quad meet last weekend.
College volleyball
Belmont Abbey’s Aimee Cloninger (Carson) had three kills and seven digs, but the Crusaders were knocked out of the league tournament by Limestone.
College hoops
Tre Williams (Carson) had 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for Davidson County Community College in a 111-100 win against Denmark Tech.
