The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will discuss a dedication plaque for the Wallace Educational Forum, the new central office building for the Rowan-Salisbury School System at their meeting on Monday.
The board will be meeting in the Long Street Board Room at 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer at 3 p.m.
Originally, the plaque was going to have the names of the current Board of Education members and superintendent administration, including Superintendent Lynn Moody, Assistant Superintendent Julie Morrow and Assistant Superintendent Anthony Vann. The plaque would also have the names of the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, including Chairman Greg Edds, Vice Chairman Jim Greene, Judy Klusman, Mike Caskey and Craig Pierce. County Manager Aaron Church’s name was also on the plaque.
During the meeting on Oct. 26, the board voted to add Kay Wright Norman and L.A. Overcash, both former Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education members, to the plaque.
Board member Chuck Hughes was the first board member to bring up adding names to the plaque.
“I think it’d be wonderful if we could somehow get (Kay Wright Norman’s) name on here to honor her,” he said. “She is really, more so than I, deserving of that honor.”
Board member Travis Allen agreed with adding the name, and suggested another.
“Mr. Overcash was a member at the time when the contracts were done and all the voting was decided,” Allen said.
Chairman Josh Wagner said the county commissioners who had a part in the building’s decisions also deserve recognition.
“To me, if you’re going to go back and add the board (of education) members, you would go back and add the county commissioners that approved the funding agreement. So now all of a sudden we’ve extended it yet again,” Wagner said.
“And you should probably also add the sitting county manager at the time as well,” Wagner added.
The board eventually used two separate motions to approve adding Norman and Overcash to the plaque, as well as former county commissioners Jim Sides, Jon Barber and Chad Mitchell.
The board will discuss the names being added to the original plaque or creating a separate plaque for the added names.
First readings of documents on topics like gang-related activities, child abuse reports and investigations and student surveys will also be discussed during the meeting.
