Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan was named SAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Sheehan completed 68 percent of his passes and rushed for 106 yards in a 28-14 win against Lenoir-Rhyne.
Newberry linebacker Taylor McDonnell was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Carson-Newman kicker Carson Wise is the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Jared Barber (Davie) had a game-turning 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown in West Virginia’s 38-20 win against Texas on Saturday. Barber also had six tackles.

S.C. State’s Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) had 3 sacks, plus another tackle for loss, in Saturday’s 10-7 win against Norfolk State.

Charleston’s John Knox (Salisbury) made two interceptions in a 59-7 win against Virginia-Wise. Wise returned those picks for 44 yards. He halso had three breakups and three tackles.
Charleston (10-1) earned a bid to the D-II playoffs.

College men’s hoops
Livingstone lost twice over the weekend in Winston-Salem.
In a 54-49 loss to Charleston, Cordero Holt scored 19 points for the Blue Bears.
The Blue Bears fell 86-79 to Concord. Holt had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Ramel Belfield scored 11, and Simuel Frazier had 10.

Coll. women’s hoops
Catawba guard Bri Johnson has been named SAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Johnson, a junior from North Iredell, posted over 20 points in both of Catawba’s wins on opening weekend, including a 28-point performance in a 76-67 win against Mount Olive.

The college career of UNC Pembroke freshman Avery Locklear (South Rowan) got off to a fast start.
Locklear scored 16 points in a 67-62 win against Division I Campbell and had 12 in a loss to D-I UNC Wilmington. She came off the bench in both exhibition games. She hit four 3s against UNC Wilmington.

Morehead State’s Shay Steele (West Rowan) had six points, seven rebounds and six blocks in Friday’s 104-101 loss to Marshall.
Steele had a career-high 34 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes in Saturday’s 121-91 win against Kentucky Christian and helped Morehead State break the school scoring record.

Fayetteville State’s Doreen Richardson (Salisbury) scored a team-high 19 points in Friday’s 70-47 win against Concord. Richardson had 19 points and six rebounds in Saturday’s 78-63 loss to Fairmont State.

College men’s soccer
Top-ranked Pfeiffer won 2-1 against Wingate on Sunday in Misenhemer in the second round of the D-II playoffs.
Pfeiffer rallied on goals by Roberto Soares and Nathan Regis.

College volleyball
Livingstone earned the No. 4 seed from the Southern Division for the CIAA Championships. The Blue Bears (9-15) play Chowan (17-7) at noon Friday at Fayetteville State.

Prep soccer
Salisbury hosts Trinity at 6 p.m. tonight in the 2A West Regional final.
Admission is $7, and only NCHSAA level passes will be accepted.
Top-seeded Salisbury is 25-0-1 and has recorded playoff wins against East Lincoln, Ashe County, CATA and Hendersonville.
Seventh-seeded Trinity is 20-5-1 and has won playoff matches against Stuart Cramer, Lake Norman Charter, second-seeded Chase and 2014 state champ Newton-Conover.
Trinity and Salisbury battled to a scoreless tie at Ludwig Stadium on Aug. 24.
Trinity is 10-3-1 in road games and is currently on a 14-game winning streak.
Trinity has scored 57 goals, while allowing 22.
Salisbury is 14-0-1 at home this season and has outscored opponents 143-14.
Landon Goodman has scored 64 goals this season.
Salisbury has been a great odd-year team and won state titles in 2011 and 2013.
State-championship games will be played at N.C. State on Saturday at 11, 2, 5 and 8.

Local golf
The McCanless Couples played Captain’s Choice on Sunday.
The first-place team was David Huneycutt, Harry Owens, Terrol Kendall, Frank Foster and Alex Miller
The second-place team was Azalee Story, Beverly Cobb, Phyllis Myers andMary Seaford
Cobb won closest to the pin. Kendall won longest putt.

Salisbury’s Michael Childress played in the Webb Simpson Challenge over the weekend.
On Saturday, Childress shot a 72 at the Country Club of North Carolina.
On Sunday, he shot a 79 at Mid Pines. He finished in 10th place.

The North Hills Christian School Inaugural “Fore the Future” Golf Tournament was held at Crescent.
The first-place team was Shane Wolford, Chip Comadoll, Stan Lamb and Brent Parks.
The second-place team was Jeff Sollenberger, Susan Sollenberger, Wayne Rosa and Kyle Mitchell.
Bob Humble, Mike Conway, Taz Strickland and Allen Fesperman finished third. Winning a Nike VRS covert driver was Tinsley Merrell. The winner of an Odyssey putter for closest to the pin was Ashton Frank.

Jayvee hoops
Gabe Hinceman scored 14 points for East Rowan’s jayvees in a loss to North Stanly on Monday.

8th-grade hoops
West Rowan beat Erwin 54-43 in its first game.
Jay Joseph led the Bulldogs with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Quay Weeks had 15 points, seven steals and six assists. Ty’kese Warren had eight points, and Will Moseley scored five.
Brandon Jefferson had 19 points for Erwin.
West will play at Corriher-Lipe on Thursday.
