Doug Creamer: Be sure you are ready

For about a week there were stories on the internet saying that we would be able to see some fireballs in the sky. We had rain and cloudy weather on some of the evenings so I couldn’t get out there to watch for them. When we finally got some clear skies I went out to see if I could get lucky and see some fireballs. I saw lots of meteors. I did get lucky and see a couple of fireballs even though I was hoping to see more after the big fuss the internet was making over the possibility of seeing so many.
I lay out under the stars for several evenings. It is hard to find a good dark place as my neighbors keep some bright lights on. We also have a street light close to our house which can hinder stargazing. Never-the-less, the longer I laid out looking in the night sky the more stars appeared. A couple of the evenings the skies were crystal clear and the stars and meteors were breath taking.
As I lay out there it was very peaceful, giving me an opportunity to talk with my Father while I waited to see what might fall from the sky. We had some of the nicest talks on those evenings. We talked about all kinds of things that were on my mind and I prayed for family and friends. I could have laid out there a lot longer on some of those evenings except that it was cold and getting very late. A couple of those evenings I was up way past my bedtime just watching the stars and talking to my Father.
I sensed God’s love, His presence, and took in the beauty of His creation. His peace was as tangible as the chair I was sitting in. I could sense the goodness and the grace of God. I knew for certain that a God who could create such a magnificent display of stars, meteors, and fireballs could certainly take care of me and guide me into the future. After all, He is my destiny.
When I got home from work last Friday I was sleepy because of the crazy week and the late night stargazing. I popped the TV on and hit my recliner, hoping the din of the evening news would put me fast to sleep. The first channel had some news out of Paris with lots of police cars and people running all around. I changed channels and found commercials which began to lull me into dreamland.
When the commercials ended, that station was following the story from Paris. The flashing lights and heightened news reporting wasn’t conducive to sleep. I changed the channel again only to find more news from Paris. I turned the volume up and tried to get my sleepy head around the story that was unfolding before my eyes. I watched and listened as the horror was reported live right in my formerly peaceful home.
When I look back on my week I realize I witnessed the glory and majesty of God’s creation … His goodness; and the vile and sick behavior of the devil … his wickedness. Some people like to think the devil doesn’t exist or if you don’t think about him, he won’t bother you. All of those people who simply went out for a nice meal, a friendly soccer match, or a concert found out that the devil is real and his purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy.
This reminds me of what we all need to understand. We have no promise of tomorrow. We need to make sure that we have established a relationship with God and know where our final destination will be. Those people didn’t know that they were going out for their last evening. They now have to stand before God and give an account for their lives. If they have not accepted Jesus as their Savior then a tragedy far greater than what they experienced will be their destiny. We choose our eternal destination by choosing whether we accept Christ.
I want to encourage you to consider your choice … have you accepted Jesus as your personal Savior? You can know for sure where you will spend eternity by making this one decision. God loves you and has made a way for you to spend eternity with Him. He wants you to be with Him. He sent His son to die for you so you could have the free gift of salvation. The choice is yours, not His. He made a way for you. Will you accept Jesus and know your eternal destination?
