A quiet Sunday evening was shattered when shots were fired into a house off Long Ferry Road, forcing a woman and children to crawl through their home.
Joshua Blackwelder of the 100 block of Harris Point Road told Rowan County Sheriff’s Office deputies that he went out to his driveway at 9:15 Sunday night. Blackwelder was planning on returning a moped borrowed from a friend, he said, when something at the end of the driveway caught his eye. There was a male figure standing in the road.
Blackwelder told deputies the person raised a gun and began shooting.
According to the report, Blackwelder ran back inside his home and told his girlfriend and her two children to hit the floor and crawl to the back bedroom of the house.
Blackwelder’s neighbor said that he and his wife were sitting in their living room when they saw the flash from the barrel and heard gunshots.
The neighbor told deputies that when he looked outside, he saw a man standing in the road next to a maroon-colored vehicle. After the shots stopped, he told investigators, the person crouched down, climbed into the car and drove off without turning on the headlights.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office reported that investigators discovered seven .40-caliber shell casings along the margin of the road. A low fence between the driveway and the house had seven bullet holes, and there were seven holes in the exterior of the house.
Three rounds were discovered inside the house. Two were lodged in a backpack hanging by the door. One was discovered lodged in a novel which was below a coffee table.
Blackwelder reported that the figure was a male of medium to heavy build who was possibly light skinned.
