Carson’s girls basketball team won its SPC opener, rolling 62-42 at Central Cabarrus on Tuesday.
“The first half was not pretty, but we played hard the entire game and cleaned things up the second half,” Carson coach Brooke Misenheimer said. “We were able to get out in transition in the second half and score some easy baskets. This was a really solid conference win for us.”
Everyone who dressed scored for the Cougars.
Olivia Gabriel had 17 points. McKenzie Gadson had 10. Kailie Ketchie and Anne Marie Turney scored seven each. Maren Shumaker and Taylor Wiggins scored six apiece.
Carson held Central’s standout guard Mahaley Holit to two points.

East Rowan’s girls had a poor shooting night (15-for-67) and lost 57-46 at Cox Mill in SPC play on Tuesday.
Shenell Pharr scored 17 for the Mustangs, while Jocelyn Lowe had 13, Shenique Pharr added 10 points.
Shenell Pharr had 13 rebounds. Lauren Weisensel had eight.
“We had plenty of opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize on free throws and we didn’t capitalize on opportunities after offensive rebounds,” East coach Danielle Porter said. “We played in waves and streaks, but we’ve got to be more consistent.”
Foul trouble hurt the Mustangs.
Christa Hill scored 14 for the Chargers. Rachel Barker had 11.

South Rowan’s boys lost 79-44 at home to Northwest Cabarrus on Monday.
It was a close game for a quarter, but the Trojans built 44-28 halftime lead and held the Raiders to 16 points in the second half.

Central Cabarrus won 80-46 against Carson’s boys on Tuesday. Navy commit Kyran McClure scored 25 points for the Vikings.
Carson was down 13 at halftime and cut its deficit to five points in the third quarter, but eventually Central pulled away.
Jamarius Hairston scored 16 to lead the Cougars. Owen White had seven, and Armoni Hogue added six.

Ashlyn Hampton scored 14 points. Madison Zaferatos had 13.

Women’s hoops
Catawba lost to Coker 80-68 at Goodman Gym on Tuesday.
Bri Johnson and Terri Rogers scored 17 points each for the Indians.
Catawba shot 36.4 percent. Sydney Shull scored 16 for the Cobras (2-4, 1-0 SAC).

8th-grade hoops
KJ Hernandez hit a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to give West Rowan a 30-27 win against Mooresville (2-2).
Jay Joseph had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Quay Weeks had nine points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (3-0).
Zeb Burns, Will Moseley, and Jonny Hassard had strong defensive games for West.
West will play Southeast next Tuesday.

Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys basketball team won against Cannon School and North Hills for the championship of the Sacred Heart Tip-off Tournament.
Archie Dees scored 17 points against North Hills. Charlie Barr, Hank Robins and Noah Stockton played well on defense.

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee boys lost 23-19 in overtime to Forsyth Country Day in the championship game of the Tip-Off Tournament. Salisbury Academy won against Sacred Heart to avance to the championship game.
Leading scorers in the tournament were Josh Portillo, Wade Robins, Harrison McCall and Zeb Harry.
The jayvees defeated North Hills 38-19. Harrison McCall scored 14 points for the Jaguars.

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls were runner-up in the Sacred Heart Tip-Off Tournament, losing 9-4 to Forsyth Country Day after beating Sacred Heart 8-1.
Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls lost 6-3 to North Hills. Abby Lawson scored all of SA’s points. Riley Peltz, Brooke Cunningham and Morgan Jeter were strong on defense.

Local golf
Charlie Barr and Michael Childress played in the North Carolina Junior Golf Foundation tournament at Duke.
Barr shot 85-82 — 167 to finish third in the middle school division.
Michael Childress shot 80-76 — 156 to finish fourth in the high school division and tied for first among golfers in grades 9 and 10.
