The new mayor of Salisbury will be elected today.
The Salisbury City Council will meet today at 4 p.m. at City Hall on 217 South Main St.
During the meeting, the new and returning members of the council will convene for the first time. The council members will be sworn in with an oath.
After the council receives all of the nominations for mayor, the new mayor will be elected by the council and sworn in. The new mayor will then take over the meeting.
The mayor pro tem will also be elected and sworn in during the meeting.
Historically, the candidate who won the most votes in that year’s council election is named mayor.
In the November election, incumbent members Karen Alexander, Maggie Blackwell and Brian Miller received the top votes. Alexander won the most votes with 1,831. Blackwell was second place in the race with 1,604 votes, and Miller was third with 1,476 votes.
Local attorney and entrepreneur David Post was fourth place in the race with 1,376 votes and community activist Kenny Hardin was fifth place with 1,241 votes.
Both Mayor Paul Woodson and council member Pete Kennedy decided not to seek re-election.
In other council business, the council will consider:
- adopting a concurring ordinance with NCDOT to establish 55 mph within the new mile posting of Cedar Springs Road and repealing portions of the code that are no longer valid
- purchasing body cameras for the Salisbury Police Department
- an appointment to the Tourism and Cultural Development Commission
