Prep Basketball: Salisbury girls are 3-0

KANNAPOLIS — The third win for the Salisbury girls last season came on Jan. 23.
This time they got No. 3 on the final day of November, winning 57-54 at 4A A.L. Brown.
Tyzarea Alexander poured in a career-best 23 points for the Hornets. Her previous high was 18.
Alexander got scoring help from Maria Capito, who hit three 3-pointers and scored 14 points. Freshman Bryanna Troutman added 11 points and worked hard on the boards.
Troutman hit a 3-pointer at the horn to give Salisbury a 25-24 halftime lead.
Mariah Howard had a big third quarter for the Wonders, but 3-pointers by Capito and Troutman helped the Hornets take a 38-36 lead entering the final quarter.
With Salisbury clinging to a 41-38 lead, Alexander scored two straight buckets for a seven-point lead with five minutes left.
The Hornets (3-0) pushed their lead to eight points on a steal and layup by Capito, and they led 55-46 with 1:10 remaining after Alexander made a free throw.
They were able to hold on from there despite a 3-pointer by A.L. Brown’s Akeena Maxwell.
Alexander and Capito scored eight points each in the fourth quarter.
The Wonders, who were making their season debut under new head coach Lamont Johnson, got 17 points from Kyla Downs and 11 from Howard.
