Catawba linebacker Kyle Kitchens and North Alabama quarterback Luke Wingo earned regional player of the year honors.
Kitchens was joined on the first team defense by cornerback Case Woodard. Offensive lineman Lewis McCormick was a second team pick.
Kitchens, a sophomore, piled up a SAC-leading 13 sacks on the season and posted 23 stops for losses.
His sack total for a season is second at Catawba to DeVonte Peterson’s 14.5.
Kitchens totaled 65 tackles on the year with two forced fumbles and three recoveries. He returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown against Mars Hill.
Woodard, a junior, led the conference with five interceptions, one of which he returned for a score in the win over Lenoir-Rhyne. Woodard also broke up a dozen passes and blocked a kick.
McCormick was a mainstay on the line during his career. The senior left tackle did not miss a game over his four seasons and started in all 45 of those games.

Prep football
NCHSAA state football championships are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11-12, at three different sites, including Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh and BB&T Field in Winston-Salem.

SAC athletics
Wingate leads the 2015-16 South Atlantic Conference Echols Athletic Excellence Award standings after the conclusion of the fall season.
The Bulldogs won three championships to garner 62 points as they took home the League title in women’s cross country, volleyball and shared the championship in men’s soccer. Wingate also finished in second in women’s soccer.
In second-place is Carson-Newman with 56.5 points.
Queens is currently No. 3 in the standings with 48 points.
The Echols Athletic Excellence Award is presented annually to the member athletic department that earns the highest point total based on cumulative final standings in each of the conference’s 18 sports.

South YMCA hoops

The South Y registration for boys basketball, grades 3-8 is open through Dec. 5.
Little Shooters II registration for boys and girls in grades 1-2 is open through Jan. 4.
Basket Buddies, Pre-K-K and Mini-Hoopsters clinic, ages 3-4, are open until January 4.
A Christmas Basketball Camp/Shooting clinic taught by Damien Argrett will be Dec. 28-30 from 8 until 3.

Hurley Warriors

The Hurley YMCA Warriors Cross Country team competed at the Footlocker South Region Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Nov. 28 at McAlpine Park.
The 9-10 team took first place.Members of that team are Jake Swicegood, Triston Rabon, Connor Price, Eli Julian and Grayson Steedley.

College soccer
Pfeiffer men’s soccer coach Bob Reasso has been named National Soccer Coaches Association of America Southeast Region’s Coach of the Year.
In an announcement r Reasso has led the Falcons to a No. 1 national ranking and a 23-0 record.
Pfeiffer has advanced to the Final Four and will take on Charleston (WVa) on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla.

Salisbury Academy hoops
Salisbury Academy’s varsity boys won 35-20 against Concordia. Eight players scored for the Jaguars and they didn’t alow a basket in the fourth quarter.

Taron Lilly scored eight points for the Jaguars.

Salisbury Academy’s jayvee girls won 7-6 against Concordia. Morgan Jeter scored three points. Riley Peltz and Abby Lawson were tough on defense.

Josh Portillo scored 19 points. Wade Robins and Harrison McCall had nine each.

Jayvee girls basketball
Taylor Harwood and Sarah Musselwhite scored seven points each to lead Carson to a 32-22 win against East Rowan.
Lanie Fulk had eight for the Mustangs.

West Rowan’s boys led 28-6 at halftime and won 35-20 against Southeast.
Jay Joseph had 14 points, and Tykese Warren had eight for the Bulldogs.
Marcellus Washington led Southeast with six points.
West plays Knox on Thursday.

Newberry won 122-69 against Allen. The Wolves hit 22 3-pointers, a record for a SAC team.

Tre Williams (Carson) scored 20 points for the Davidson County Community College Storm in Tuesday’s 122-97 win against the UNC jayvees in the Smith Center. David Tripp (A.L. Brown) scored six for the Storm.

SPC hoops
Robinson took a 96-84 overtime win over Central Cabarrus, in SPC boys basketball action Tuesday night.
The score was 76-all after regulation but Robinson (2-0, 1-0) outscored the Vikings, 20-8, in the overtime period.
LaVar Batts Jr. scored 34 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Jordan McKenzie followed with 17.
Kyran McClure led Central Cabarrus (3-1, 1-1) with 29 points.

Mahaley Holit scored 31 for Central Cabarrus’s girls in a 63-60 win against Robinson.

Ray Kowalski scored 31 points to lead Concord to a 77-46 win against South Rowan.
South was only down five at the half against a Concord team that was minus its football players.
