The International Women Club has been giving to the Christmas Happiness Fund for as long as Elisa Cabrera, the club’s treasurer, can remember.

“It’s a tradition that we have every year,” she said.

The club donated to the fund in memory of its deceased members.

The International Women Club is a source of friendship and comfort for women who were born outside of the United States. Women who are married to men who were born outside of the country are invited to join as well.

Cabrera said they have about 30 members.

“Some of those women didn’t have any friends and that’s why they started the club,” she said.

Cabrera said the women get together about once a month and get to know people from other countries.

“They tell the story of how they got here, and it’s interesting,” she said.

The club has limited resources and also donates money to other organizations, but they always give to Christmas Happiness.

“We don’t want any kids to be without a gift on Christmas Day,” she said.

The Salisbury Post collects the contributions while the Salvation Army of Rowan County distributes the donations to the Christmas Happiness Fund. Families who qualify receive a voucher for each eligible child. Contributions will be collected through Christmas Day.

Donations may be delivered to the Salisbury Post, 131 W. Innes St., between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. Donations can also be mailed to the Salisbury Post Christmas Happiness Fund, P.O. Box 4639, Salisbury, N.C. 28145-4639. Make checks payable to the Christmas Happiness Fund and indicate how you want your donation listed.
