Salvation Army could use more help

Local Salvation Army officials say they need more toys and other items to fulfill all their requests for Christmas help — lots more.

Capt. NaKisha Carr said the agency is asking for more toys for boys, especially, and could also use hats, gloves, scarves, socks and underwear.

The Salvation Army is distributing gifts and vouchers today to families who signed up last month and earlier this month through the Christmas Bureau.

Eric Nianouris, chairman of the Salvation Army board, said more families signed up than the agency expected — about 600 more.

“The Salvation Army has covered (we think) 400 of the 600 kids,” Nianouris said. “If the community can step up just a little more, the other 200 kids can at least get something for Christmas.”

Donated items — new and unwrapped — can be dropped off Friday at the warehouse beside Life Church at 710 Jake Alexander Blvd. W., where distribution is being done Friday.

Items may also be dropped off Friday at the Salvation Army Family Store at 521 Jake Alexander Blvd. W. Be sure to specify the donation is for Christmas help, Carr said.

The need won’t end this weekend, she said. “We anticipate families needing emergency assistance.” Donations can be dropped off early next week at the Salvation Army’s office, 620 Bringle Ferry Road. The office is open from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

The Christmas Bureau, coordinated by the United Way, received applications from 774 families with 1,777 children.
