Catawba loses in OT

Catawba’s women’s basketball team lost 66-65 in overtime at Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.
A decision was made early Wednesday to start the game two hours early due to weather concerns.
Catawba (8-9, 6-7) trailed by 14 points at halftime, but Antionette McPhail led a second-half comeback. McPhail scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Catawba shot poorly again — 23.3 percent in the first half and 31.9 percent for the game.
With Catawba down 50-39 with six minutes, left, McPhail scored eight straight points to make it a 50-47 game, and Jada Huntley tied the game with a 3-pointer.
Catawba led late in regulation, but Morgan Cooper’s jumper tied the game for L-R, and Catawba’s Mallary Clay missed a shot at the buzzer.
Lenoir-Rhyne took the lead at the outset of the overtime and never trailed.
Jazmine Charles, who starred at Central Davidson, shot 10-for-15, hit four 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead the Bears (14-4, 9-4).
Catawba plays at home against Carson-Newman on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Pfeiffer lost 120-114 in overtime at Bluefield State on Wednesday.
Sophomore guard A.J. Clark scored 32 points and had 12 assists for the Falcons (4-15) in the non-conference game. David McNair had 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Pfeiffer standout Mike Smith did not play.
Shakir Dunning had 36 points for Bluefield State.
• Oshon West (North Rowan) had four points and five rebounds in Louisburg’s 81-60 win against Catawba Valley Community College.
Tydus Parks (A.L. Brown) scored 12 for CVCC.
West scored six in Louisburg’s 71-68 loss to Richard Bland.
• Tevin Stark (A.L. Brown) has missed some time with injuries this season, but he had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Sandhills Community College in an easy 101-60 win against the Methodist junior varsity.
Pfeiffer’s women’s basketball team lost to Converse 62-53 on Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C., in a Confernce Carolinas game.
Carlisha Hollivay scored 11 points for the Falcons (2-16), while Hollie Boggs had 10.
Amy Steller (Davie) had seven points and 10 rebounds.
It was the first win of the season for Converse.
Former Cox Mill boys basketball coach and now AD at Union Academy Brad Hinson and Eric Clark are in their third year of running the Cabarrus Force basketball club.
There will be three Force boys teams for 8th, 9th and 10th grades. Players are from South Rowan, Concord, Northwest Cabarrus, Robinson, Cox Mill and Hickory Ridge. Tryouts are on Saturday Feb. 8 at Cox Mill from 1-4 p.m. See www.cabarrusforcebasketball.com.
