SALISBURY — It was a night of comebacks at New Trent Gym.
Livingstone rallied from 17 points down in the second half to pull out a CIAA men’s basketball thriller on Tuesday night, topping Bowie State, 95-94, in overtime.
Just like in the earlier women’s game, Livingstone came from behind against long odds. When Bowie’s Miles Jackson sank a 3-point shot with 9:07 left in the game, the Bulldogs led, 73-56.
But Coach James Stinson’s Blue Bears outscored Bowie down the stretch, 31-14, forcing the game into overtime. Eric Dubose’s jumper knotted the score at 87-87 with 43 seconds left.
The Blue Bear women were down 16 points in the second half, but rallied to win over Bowie State, 59-51 (see article on page 1B).
In the men’s overtime, Livingstone took a 93-91 lead at the 2:58-mark on two free throws from Cordero Holt. But a layup from Miles Jackson put Bowie back on top 50 seconds later.
Dubose was fouled with 13 seconds left in overtime, with Livingstone trailing 94-93. Dubose made both free throws for game’s final score, as Bowie’s last attempt by Michael Briscoe was no good with five seconds left and Juwan Cole rebounded for the Blue Bears.
Livingstone goes to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.
Dubose led Livingstone with 23 points while Daryl Trynham followed with 20. Ty Newman scored 16 points and Nasir Austin had 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Bowie State’s Justin Beck (30) and Julian Livingston (21) combined to score 51 points but it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs, now 8-5 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. Jackson scored 16 points and Briscoe added 11.
Livingstone enjoyed the lead throughout most of the first half, before Beck knocked down a 3-point jumper with 2:05 left. That basket gave the Bulldogs a 40-39 lead and the visitors maintained an advantage for the rest of the half.
