In this Salisbury Post file photograph taken July 19, 1970, 11-year-old Richard Bullock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Olin Bullock, sits in his racer that won the 1970 Soapbox Derby crown in Salisbury. The winning car was sponsored by Fiber Industries. In the championship, Bullock outdistanced Mike Pryor. It was the 12th annual Soap Box Derby sponsored by the Salisbury Jaycees, Aaron Chevrolet and the city Recreation Department. For the win, Bullock received a $500 savings bond, the winner’s trophy and a trip to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the Soap Box Derby’s All-American finals. Bullock was a student at Hurley Elementary School. The Salisbury derby was held on North Main Street.
