Area Sports Briefs: Livingstone drops 2 at Chowan

Livingstone’s men’s basketball team made a spirited rally on Monday but still lost, 73-70, to Chowan.
The game was played at Roanoke-Chowan Community College in Ahoskie because of “court conditions” at Chowan.
Chowan (12-3, 5-0 CIAA) won its seventh in a row.
Livingstone (7-9, 2-3) CIAA fell behind by 17 points after 12 minutes and was looking at a 36-19 deficit.
But by halftime the Blue Bears were back in the game, trailing 41-35.
Livingstone caught up at 43-all early in the second half, and it was a battle from there.
With Livingstone leading 58-55 with just under five minutes left, Kortez Smith got a big three-point play for the Hawks.
Marco Haskins had a key 3-pointer for the Hawks for a 69-64 lead with 1:27 left.
LC’s Eric Dubose had a 3-point look that would’ve forced overtime, but he missed with one second left.
Smith led the Hawks with 18 points.
Jimmy Wilson scored 18 for the Blue Bears. Daryl Traynham added 15, and Ty Newman had 10.

Livingstone women
Livingstone’s women’s basketball team lost at Chowan, 68-60, on Monday in CIAA action.
The Blue Bears shot 42.1 percent, but couldn’t overcome 27 turnovers and 25 offensive rebounds by Chowan.
Wende Foster and Zena Lovette scored 12 points each for the Blue Bears.
Brittany Taylor and Bria Patterson scored 11 each.
Foster blocked four shots. Taylor led the Blue Bears (8-6, 2-2 CIAA) with seven rebounds.
Mercedes Tapia and Courtni Williams scored 12 points each for the Northern-Division leading Hawks (10-5, 4-1 CIAA).

Catawba women
Catawba sophomore forward Terri Rogers was named the South Atlantic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Rogers posted back-to-back 20-point games and averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds in two victories.
The sophomore ranks fifth in the SAC with 14.6 points per game and is also fifth with 8.4 rebounds.
8th-grade hoops
Knox’s boys won 39-38 against West Rowan on Monday when Jay Joseph’s last-second shot didn’t fall.
Jaquez Smith led Knox (10-3) with 14 points. Reggie Everhart had nine points.
Tykese Warren led the Bulldogs (9-4) with 15 points. Jalen Houston had eight points, and Quay Weeks added seven.

Erwin’s girls rolled 46-19 against China Grove.
Maci Cooper led the Eagles with 16 points, Adalie Harrison had 13. Jaylee Usher scored eight, and Caroline Houpe had five.
