Rowan weather: Snow, sleet and ice expected, with high winds

2 p.m. update:

Tonight, we have a chance of sleet before 2 a.m., then snow and sleet between 2 and 4, then snow likely after 4. The low will be 29. Wind picking up after midnight rom the northeast at 5-7 mph. The Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. Snow and sleet accumulation of 1 to 2 inches.

Snow and sleet will continue Friday until about 2 p.m., then sleet for a while, followed by freezing rain in the afternoon. Patchy fog along with patchy freezing fog after 5 p.m. The high will be just 30 degrees. Northwest winds will blow at 14-20 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. Ice accumulation up to three-tenths of an inch. Additional snow and sleet of 1-2 inches.

Freezing rain before 3 a.m. Saturday, then snow. Low of 29, with continued north wind at 13 mph and up to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent, with new ice accumulation of one- to two-tenths of an inch and up to half an inch additional snow.

Saturday, expect snow in the morning, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation and continued winds at 9-11 mph from the northwest. Cloudy Saturday night, with a low of 25.

The new week starts out mostly sunny and a little warmer, with a high of 48. The low will be 35.

Tuesday will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 51 and a low of 35.

There’s a 30 percent chance of showers Wednesday, but with partly sunny skies and a high near 46.

The snow skipped us and headed north, but the area is still under a winter storm warming from midnight tonight to 7 p.m. on Saturday. That means we can expect a significant amount of snow, sleet and ice.

Today will be the calm before the storm, with mostly sunny skies and a high of 44. An east northeast wind will blow at 3-8 mph.

Tonight is when things begin to get messy. There is a chance of sleet and snow before 2 a.m., then snow is likely between 2 and 4 a.m. After that, it’s back to sleet and snow. The low will be 29, with east northeast winds at 3-7 mph. The combination of snow and sleet could reach 1 to 2 inches.

The National Weather Service, Highway Patrol and the N.C. Department of Transportation all urge people to stay home during the storm, as driving conditions will become treacherous.

Friday, the snow and sleet continue at least until 10 a.m., when it changes over to mostly sleet. Freezing rain is possible after noon. The high will be 30, with strong winds of 13-15 mph from the east northeast, and gusts up to 22 mph. With snow, sleet and freezing rain combined, the chances are power lines and trees could come down. The chance of precipitation is 100 percent, with ice up to three-tenths of an inch and snow and sleet of 1-2 inches.

Nothing improves Friday night, with freezing rain before 3 a.m. and then snow. The low will be 29, just a degree off the high. The winds will shift to the north around 13 mph, with gusts up to 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 90 percent, with an additional .1 to .2 of an inch of ice. Less than half an inch of snow is expected.

Snow is likely Saturday morning before 10. It will be a cloudy day with a high of 34 and winds from the northwest at 9-11 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday night will be clear and cold, with a low of 25.

The sun comes out Sunday, and we’ll warm up to 44 degrees, but it will be a cold night, with a low of 23.
